2021 SCAC 100 fly Champion Miguel Vasquez Transfers to Delaware

Miguel Vasquez of Guatemala has announced his decision to transfer to and swim for the University of Delaware beginning in the fall of 2021. He swam for Centenary College his freshman and juniors years before making the move to Delaware. He has three years of NCAA eligibility remaining.

Vasquez was a top swimmer for the Centenary College. In the spring of 2021, he took home an individual title at the SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships. He touched first in the men’s 100 fly in a time of 50.89. This was the first individual conference title for the Centenary men’s team since 2014. He picked up silver medal in the 100 back (51.03) and a bronze medal in the 100 free (46.39).

His 100 fly title was a significant improvement for him. Freshman year, Vasquez squeezed into the 100 fly final, ultimately touching 8th in a time of 51.98. He picked up a pair of silver medals in the 100 free (46.19) and back (50.66).

He now holds Centenary College school records in the 50 fly and the 100 back. In 2021, Vasquez received the SCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Elite 19 Award. According to Centenary’s website, the honor recognizes an athlete who excels both academically and athletically.

The SCAC Elite 19 is awarded to the student-athlete who has completed the equivalent of at least 60 credit hours at his or her current institution and has at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA. The student-athlete must also have earned All-SCAC First, Second or Third Team honors in his/her sport for that particular season.

Vasquez held a 4.0 GPA in Theoretical Mathematics and he earned All-SCAC in all of his 2021 conference events.

Vasquez has already begun competing for the Blue Hens. He swam the 100 free and the 100 back at their season opener against UMBC and Johns Hopkins. He finished 4th in the free and 7th in the back and led off the 400 free relay.
