The 2019 collegiate men’s water polo season kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 7 with 47 matches on the slate including seven tournaments across the country from California to Rhode Island, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Colorado.
#1 USC has the weekend off, but the remainder of the CWPA Preseason Top 20 and the top five vote getters outside of the poll are in action. 10 ranked teams will be part of the action in La Jolla, California, at the UCSD Triton Invitational. Four ranked teams will be in Annapolis, Maryland, for the Navy Open, while five will travel to Providence, Rhode Island, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the Bruno Classic.
#9 UC San Diego plays host to the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, California with a field including #4 Cal, Chapman, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Concordia (Irvine), Fresno Pacific, #5 Long Beach State, #14 Loyola Marymount, #7 Pepperdine, #19 Pomona-Pitzer, #10 UC Davis, #13 UC Irvine, #7 UC Santa Barbara, and RV Whittier. The tournament is slated for 14 matches on Saturday at Triton Pool and Canyonview Pool. Sunday’s 14-game schedule will be determined by Saturday’s pool play action across four groups.
Vote getter Navy brings in Austin College, Fordham, Iona, Johns Hopkins, La Salle, #12 Princeton, #3 Stanford and #2 UCLA to Annapolis for the two-day Navy Open.
Providence, Rhode Island and Cambridge, Massachusetts, are the home of 10 Saturday contests and nine more on Sunday at the Bruno Classic, hosted by #20 Brown and #11 Harvard. #16 Bucknell, #16 Cal Baptist, Cal Lutheran, Connecticut College, McKendree, MIT, vote getter St. Francis Brooklyn and Wagner round out the field.
#5 Pacific brings Cuesta College, #18 San Jose State and RV Santa Clara to Stockton, California, for the Pacific Invitational.
Vote getter Air Force welcomes #15 George Washington, La Verne, Ottawa (Arizona) Redlands and Salem to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for the Air Force Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Washington & Jefferson welcomes Gannon, Mercyhurst and Penn State Behrend for four Saturday contests.
Cal Tech will play Cypress, Cal State Fullerton and Cal Mirimar in the Citrus Tournament in Fullerton, California.
