After racing to a win in the 100 back earlier in the meet, NC State’s Alexia Zevnik grabbed another 1st place finish in the women’s 100 free on the final night of Greensboro sectionals. Zevnik’s 56.20 put her over a second ahead of the field, with Lakeside teammates Brooke Bauer (57.54) and Monica McGrath (57.61) closing out the top 3 behind her.
Kirsty Coventry, a two-time Olympic gold medalist for Zimbabwe, posted a fast 200 back win to best the field by over 7 seconds. Coventry won the race in 2:10.99, a couple seconds shy of her season best 2:09.09 that ranks her 18th in the world this year. Next month, she’ll be swimming in her 5th Olympic Games.
On the men’s side, Simonas Bilis completed the sprint free event sweep tonight with a victory in the 100 free. Bilis clocked a 50.54 to get to the wall ahead of Lucas Popp (51.30) and William Tarvestad (51.84), who closed out the podium in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
NC State’s Anton Ipsen dominated the men’s 1500, winning with a time of 15:19.01 that put him over 40 seconds ahead of anyone else in the field. Ipsen will be swimming this event in Rio after qualifying to represent Denmark in his first Olympic Games this summer.
Another NC State distance swimmer, Hannah Moore, cracked the world’s top 10 for 2016 in the women’s 1500. Moore swam a personal best 16:19.65 to win the race, landing her in the number 10 spot. Among Americans, she’s now the 2nd fastest of the year behind Ashley Twichell’s 16:11.59 from the Charlotte PSS in May.

Anon- Thanks for catching that. It was a really good swim. Because it’s the Olympic year, I haven’t kept up much with the women’s 1500 or men’s 800. I looked at the rankings, and you’re correct. I’ve updated the article accordingly. NC State women’s distance swimmers have been great all year, and I’ve definitely noticed.
