After the conclusion of the high school state championship season in North Carolina, a number of the state’s best launched right into the North Carolina Swimming LSC Championships.
While some of the same matchups were relitigated, in other cases it gave swimmers the chance to swim non-high school events or square off with swimmers who might be in different events, all without the same high school event count limits.
Among those performers was SwimMAC Carolina’s David Sammons. The 15-year-old high school freshman took home high point honors for the boys, winning four events.
His individual results:
- 200 free – 1:37.05 (PB by 1.23 seconds) – 1st
- 100 back – 50.14 – 4th
- 200 back – 1:45.85 (PB by .79 seconds) – 2nd
- 100 fly – 48.99 – scratched finals
- 200 fly – 1:45.06 (1:44.72 in prelims PB by .52 seconds) – 1st
- 100 IM – 51.02 (PB by 2.94 seconds) – 4th
- 200 IM – 1:49.61 – 1st
- 400 IM – 3:49.65 (PB by 8.08 seconds) – 1st
Among 15-year-olds, he now ranks 3rd nationally in the 400 IM, 3rd in the 200 free, and 2nd nationally in the 200 fly after new best times.
This meet came about 10 days after the NCISAA Division 1 State Championship meet, where he finished 2nd in the 200 IM in a new best time of 1:47.65 and 3rd in the 100 fly in 48.77.
Other stars of that meet for the largest private schools in the state who raced here included New Wave’s Mattaus Rammel, who won three events and swam new best times in the 200 free (1:43.94), 50 free (20.64), and 200 fly (1:47.12).
This meet also saw a rematch of the NCISAA distance events when 16-year-old Santiago Alzate held off Junior National Teamer Norvin Clontz in the 1650 free, winning 15:19.96 to 15:20.04.
Alzate also won the 500 free (4:23.69) and placed 2nd in the 1000 free in a new best time (9:04.20). Ian Platts-Mills just out-touched Alzate in that 1000 in 9:04.03.
The high point winner on the girls’ side of the meet was June Delmar from SwimMAC Carolina. Her meet included a win in the 200 IM (2:00.59), and several best times like a 4:15.17 in the 400 IM.
Her teammate Gabrielle Smith swept the sprint freestyles, winning the 50 free (23.05) and 100 free (49.92), while also contributing to five relay wins.
Other Highlights from North Carolina LSC Senior Champs:
- David Wahlen from YOTA won the 100 free (45.41), knocking 1.75 seconds off his previous best time, the 100 back (knocking .88 seconds off his previous best time), and the 200 back (1:45.16). Wahlen, 24, previously swam for Queens and LSU and has continued training while starting his professional career outside of the pool.
- 16-year-old Daisy Collins from NCAC swept the longer freestyle races, winning the 200 (1:49.09) 500 (4:51.70), 1000 (9:49.70), and 1650 (16:18.70) freestyles.

While the top performers came from a number of different teams, the scale of SwimMAC dominated the team scoring.
