Astrid Swensen, from Beverly, Massachusetts, has made a verbal commitment to swim for the University of Michigan next fall. The Beverly High School senior is the reigning Massachusetts High School Division 1 Girls Swimming and Diving champion in the 100 fly, and runner-up in the 200 IM. She finished under the previous meet record in both events, and her 55.41 will be the time to be in the 2015 championship meet.
Swensen swims for YMCA of the North Shore, where she finished third in 200y fly, fifth in 100y fly, and eighth in the 400y IM at 2014 National YMCA Short Course Championships. In long course season she took third in the 200m fly and 15th in 100m fly at 2014 National YMCA Long Course Championships.
Her top times over the last two seasons are:
200y fly: 1:57.87
100y fly: 54.62
400y IM: 4:20.79
200y back: 2:01.48
200y IM: 2:04.70
“I loved Michigan because of the incredible sense of team and the impressive academics.”
Swensen should be a point-scorer for Michigan from her very first B1G Championship meet. Already her 54-mid 100 fly would have made the C-final at the 2014 conference meet, and her 200 time would have dropped her right in the middle of the A-final.
The Wolverines have begun to develop so much depth that they’ll be able to take a wait-and-see approach to where else Swensen can contribute. She is part of a class of 2019 that already includes fellow commits Becca Postoll (free/back/IM), Catie DeLoof (free/back), and Siobhan Haughey (sprint free), and is threatening to move in on Minnesota’s territory at the top of the B1G charts.
I was at the game. It was packed. 113,000+. Most people at a game in the country yesterday. And a good game with U-m on top. Great catch with Astrid for a great program.
Astrid, congratulations! Great school!
Also she’s an Olympic Trial qualifier…….great swimmer who will help Michigan women as they ascend to the top of the B1 G conference. Also is a very strong student. Great pick up.
Wow, way to go Astrid!! Her dad and I swam together since 10 and Unders at the Y all the way up through HS; he swam for U Mass.
Hey, LIQUIDASSETS,
You can only be one of a few people. Message me on FB
Congratulations but it looks like they need to buy more cokes to sell more tickets…the stadium looks empty!
Recruits go on the field before game start so before the stadium fills up.
In case you haven’t seen this: http://www.michigandaily.com/sports/michigan-gives-away-football-tickets-purchase-coca-cola
But, in all seriousness, Michigan football apparently has had attendance issues this year. And there was a student body protest demanding the school fire the head coach.
Yes Michigan has had some problems with football this year but
1. This is swimming not football what does football attendance have to do with swimming recruiting?
2. Despite attendance issues they still have put 100,000 in the stands for every game since 1975, how many other universities can say that?
3. The student protest was for firing the AD Dave Brandon not the head coach
Congrats to Astrid on an excellent choice, Bottom will have the Michigan women back at the top of the Big 10 before you know it. Now the he needs to get some stud mens recruits this class.
exactly what I was talking about…they have gone decades selling out and now it just takes a coke purchase to get you a ticket…..some ticket holders pay $1000’s to get to buy the tickets and others just have to buy a coke!
