The Yale men’s swimming and diving team defeated two Ivy League rivals – Dartmouth and Penn – in a home tri-meet this weekend. Yale took the win over Dartmouth 236-63 and edged out Penn 156-144 in an intense battle; Penn was ranked 26th in the nation on CollegeSwimming.com going into the meet. The two wins extend the team’s regular season win-streak to eight and Yale remains undefeated in dual meets this season.
The divers started off the weekend with great success. Freshman Chris LaBella took fourth in the one-meter diving event with junior Wayne Zhang close behind in fifth. Rallying, LaBella finished first in the three-meter diving event, capturing his first dual meet event win of his Yale career.
Leading off the swimming events, Yale’s ‘A’ 200-yard medley relay team out-touched Penn’s relay to take first. The relay – juniors Aaron Greenberg, Kei Hyogo, Shawn Nee and team captain Alex Goss – finished with a time of 1:30.36, Yale’s fastest time in the event this season.
Hyogo continued to exert his dominance in the long-distance events, once again taking first in both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events. Following closely behind Hyogo was senior Ben Lerude, who finished runner-up in the 1000-yard freestyle. Freshman Christopher Miller also had a good day, taking fourth in the 500-yard freestyle.
Building off the early wins, junior Jonathan Rutter maintained the pace of the meet, taking first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.52. Sophomores Adrian Lin and Scott Bole rounded out the event with third and fourth place finishes respectively.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Nee just barely edged out Penn’s swimmers for first at 49.86. He was in the second position after the first lap and managed to rally for the finish. Nee also captured runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke with sophomore Edward Stolarski following-up with third.
Yale also saw success in the breaststroke events: Junior Derek Kao took runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke while Rutter took runner up in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Senior Alex Schultz and sophomore Joey Carbone led the 200-yard butterfly event, taking first and second for Yale. Freshman Duncan Lee was just out-touched by less than a tenth of a second for third place in the event. The 100-yard butterfly was a difficult race for Yale, but Bole managed to capture third with a time of 50.06.
Greenberg continued to find wins in the sprinting events, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.50 and finishing runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle at 45.63. This season, Greenberg has won every 50-yard freestyle event he’s competed in. Freshman Henry Gaissert also posted an impressive performance in the 100-yard freestyle, taking third for Yale.
In the 200-yard individual medley event, Hyogo added another win to his belt, finishing first at 1:47.47. The swim was a season best for Hyogo and was only two tenths of a second off the Robert J. H. Kiphuth pool record. Rutter had a great swim with a third-place finish in the event as well.
Rounding out the evening, Yale’s ‘A’ 400-yard relay team took runner-up, giving Yale enough points to defeat Dartmouth and to just top an close battle with Penn.
“Penn is a strong program and made us earn that win. I’m really happy with the effort and enthusiasm today,” remarked Tim Wise, the Robert J. H. Kiphuth Director of Men’s Swimming and Diving. “We got out to an early lead, but then let Penn back in a bit and had to rally during the back half of the meet. It was a good learning experience for our team and I expect this to make us stronger as we begin the second half of the season.”
Look out for the Bulldogs next weekend as they travel to take on Penn State with Rutgers in a tri-meet and look to continue their undefeated season.
