NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Yale women’s swimming and diving team had an incredibly successful meet on Thursday against Southern Connecticut. In all but one individual event, two Bulldogs swam. In all but that same event, the Bulldogs finished first and second.

Sophomore Claire O’Mara led the way for the Bulldogs in the freestyle events, swimming in both a distance and sprint event. She placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle, touching in 10 minutes and 27.35 seconds. O’Mara also won the 100-yard freestyle, finishing the race in 52.14 seconds.

Consistently a force in the breaststroke events, first-year Olivia Paoletti showed off her prowess as a freestyle swimmer on Thursday. As the sole Bulldog in the 500-yard freestyle, Paoletti finished first, completing the race in 5:09.60.

Senior Carrie Heilbrun found success in the 200-yard freestyle. She won the event, finishing with a time of 1:54.91. In the 50-yard freestyle, it was junior Ashley Pales who claimed the top spot, finishing the event in 24.95 seconds. Pales also finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:07.62.

First-year Alessandra Baldari, like Pales, won two events for the Bulldogs on Thursday. Baldari finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.30) and the 100-yard backstroke (57.96).

Captain Sophie Pilkinton also took home a first-place finish. Finishing more than a second in front of the second-place finisher, she swam the 100-yard butterfly in 58.10 seconds.

In both relays — the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay — Yale recorded the top time.

Yale, now 4-0, will have a few weeks off during the winter recess. The team’s next meet will be the UPenn/Dartmouth meet, which will be held in Philadelphia, Penn., on Jan. 4 and 5.

The Yale men’s swimming and diving team took a convincing win over Southern Connecticut State University in their final meet of the fall semester, closing out 2018 with great performances and a strong team effort.

The Bulldogs dove straight in with the top three finishes in the 200-yard medley relay to kick the meet off. The first place team – first year Cristian Bell, senior Jacob Limaldi, senior Edward Stolarski and junior Ryan Huizing – finished with a time of 1:34.85.

Sophomore Tyler Harmon and senior William Drexler followed up with first and second place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle, respectively. Harmon touched at 9:46.03 with Drexler behind at 9:57.98.

First years Liam Bogart and Felix Van Cauwelaert stepped up in the 200-yard freestyle to also take the top two finishes. Bogart finished first at 1:43.97 and Van Cauwelaert rounded out the event as the runner-up in 1:45.21.

Yale also found success throughout the meet in the sprint freestyle events. In the 50-yard freestyle, Huizing took the top spot at 20:80 while junior Duncan Lee and senior Clay Skoda completed the sweep in second and third, respectively. In the 100-yard freestyle, first year Michael Blank and sophomore Patrick Frith challenged each other in a tight race. Separated by just four hundredths of a second, Blank just out-touched Frith to take first with a time of 47.78.

The seniors on the team had a great meet as well. In the 100-yard butterfly, Stolarski finished first with a time of 51.26. First year Evan Schott followed up in third in the event. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Limaldi claimed his first collegiate win with a time of 59.14. Junior Tristan Furnary and first year Andrew Schuler rounded out the event in second and third, respectively.

Furnary also took the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley relay with a time of 1:55.20. First year Calvin Yang and sophomore Sam Pekarek took the second and third place finished to complete the sweep in the event.

With the conclusion of their fall semester, the team will look forward to an intense dual meet schedule in January against four different schools. Thus far, the Bulldogs has been undefeated in dual meets and they will be looking to continue their momentum in the spring.
