One of Wyoming’s most recognizable high school head swim coaches passed away yesterday, Sunday, June 28th. Bruce Gresly, who led Lander High School to an incredible 29 state championships, suffered a stroke last week, which led to his passing at 70 years old.

Having coached both the men’s and women’s team at Lander since 1972, Gresly is credited with the school’s program turning into quite the dominant force in the state, guiding the boys to its 19th consecutive state title just this past February.  In his early years, Gresly himself was an All-American diver at Battle Creek Central High School in Michigan in the 1960s and went on to have a successful career at the University of Wyoming.

Lander assistant coach, Tim Hester, reflecting on Gresly said, “He was just an amazing person. He cared so deeply about the kids. He could find the simplest thing to compliment or encourage someone on and just brighten their day.”

Athletic Director Doug Hughes echoed the statements, expressing, “He was truly dedicated to the individual students themselves.  He’s going to be missed by all families, friends and students. It’s difficult to imagine Lander swimming without him.”

Services for Gresly are still being finalized at this time.

Sad day Bruce was as awesome as a person as he was as a coach.
He was an alum of the University of Wyoming and our TEAM. Bruce was a WAC Champion diver.
He will be deeply missed by his swimmers, the community and by everyone who knew him.
He was a truly a gentleman.
