World Junior Championships Qualifier Abril Arias to Compete for BYU

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Class of 2023 high school senior Abril Arias has announced her commitment to swim for Brigham Young University this fall.

“I’m happy to announce my verbal commitment with Brigham Young University! Can’t wait to start this new journey, thanks to my family, friends and my coach who has helped me to get here, I know it’s still a long ride but thanks! #gocougs”

Arias represents Mexico internationally, having competed at the 2022 World Junior Championships in Peru last summer. She had several top 20 performances including an 11th place finish in the 200 IM (2:26.30), a 12th-place showing in the 200 breaststroke (2:42.98) and a 12th-place finish in the 400 IM (5:10.97). Arias also raced the 50 and 100 breast at the championships.

Arias competes for the Olympus Swim Team out of Tijuana, Mexico at the club level. Earlier this month, she swam at a National Selection Championship meet in Mexico, winning both the 200 IM (2:23.85) and 400 IM (5:05.32).

Top Times (LCM):

  • 50 breast- 35.42
  • 100 breast- 1:16.43
  • 200 breast- 2:40.13
  • 200 IM- 2:23.06
  • 400 IM- 5:01.40

The BYU women finished 3rd at the 2-23 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference Championships this past season, with two titles being claimed by diver Alexia Jackson, who won both the 3m and 10m boards. Sophomore swimmer Regan Geldmacher had two top 8 performances at the MPSF Championships, touching 3rd in the 200 free (1:48.57) and 5th in the 1650 free (16:59.30).

In the breaststroke events at the MPSF Championships this year, it took a time of 1:04.20 in the 100 breast and 2:20.56 in the 200 breast to make it into a scoring final. For the IM events, a 2:05.59 200 IM qualified for a scoring final, while it took a 4:31.33 to score in the 400 IM. Given the ability Arias has shown in long course, she figures to be in scoring contention in both the breast and IM events at BYU’s Conference meet next season.

Arias adds to BYU’s 2023 women’s recruiting class highlighted by Rachel Ballard, Kara Martinson, Victoria Schreiber, Annie Reichner, and Ellie Boyer. Martinson, a freestyle and backstroke specialist, would have claimed BYU’s fastest 500 freestyle time this season with her best time of 4:51.42. Her 500 time also would have placed first in the prelims of the MPSF Conference Championships this year.
