World Champion Hugo Gonzalez Set For This Week’s Spanish Spring Championships

2025 SPANISH SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2025 Spanish Spring Championships are nearly upon us with athletes descending upon the city of Sabadell beginning Wednesday, March 5th.

The 5-day competition represents an important stepping stone on the way to the Spanish World Championship Trials on the agenda for June.

Set to tune up this week is 26-year-old Hugo Gonzalez.

The reigning world champion is entered in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events in addition to the 100m fly and 200m IM.

Last year at the World Championshps in Doha, Gonzalez brought home the gold in the 200m back and also clinched silver in the 100m back. He finaled in both events in Paris, placing 6th in each final.

Additional men to watch this week include Sergio De Celis Montalban, Cesar Castro Valle, Carlos Garach Benito, Joao Costa, Nil Cadevall Micolau and Arbidel Gonzalez.

On the women’s side, racing stalwart Mireia Belmonte is scheduled to make an appearance.

34-year-old Belmonte is expected to take on the 100m fly, 200m IM and 400m IM in her quest to qualify for Singapore this summer.

We’ll also see the likes of Ainhoa Campabadal, Maria Garcia, Francisca Soares Martins and Mariana Cunha among the participants.
