Wog, Zavaros & Darcel Tie For High Point Award At Canadian Nationals

2017 CANADIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The individual High Point awards at Canadian Nationals were awarded using a 5-2-1 points system, rather than using the scoring used for the team race where all finalists put points on the board.

This allowed the race to come down to the elite of the elite, and as expected, some very close battles.

The women’s actually saw three women tie for the title, with Kelsey WogSarah Darcel and Mabel Zavaros all putting up 14 points.

Wog, representing the University of Manitoba Bisons, had five podium finishes, including wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. She also won silver in the 50 fly and added a pair of bronze medals in the 50 breast and 200 IM.

Darcel of Island Swimming finished in the top three in four of her five events, sweeping the IMs and finishing runner-up in the 200 breast and 200 fly. She added a 4th place finish in the 100 fly.

Zavaros of Oakville swam the widest range of events out of the three. She won the 100 & 200 fly, took silver in the 200 back, bronze in the 400 IM and 1500 free, and added a 4th in the 50 fly.

Finishing behind them in the women’s race was Pointe-Claire’s Alexia Zevnik (13), and Katerine Savard and Mackenzie Padington (12) of CAMO and Island. Zevnik won the 100 free and 100 back, Savard won the 200 free and 50 fly, and Padington won the 800 and 1500 freestyles.

Peter Brothers of the University of Calgary Swim Club won the men’s race with 12 points, edging out UBC’s Yuri Kisil and Oakville’s Mack Darragh who had 11 each.

Brothers won the 800 and 1500, placed 2nd in the 400, and had a 5th place finish in the 200 free. World Championship medalist Kisil swept the sprint frees and won bronze in the 200. Darragh won the 200 fly in Canadian record time, won the 200 IM, and took 3rd in the 100 fly.

Trailing them was a three-way tie for 4th between Markus Thormeyer (UBC), Jeremy Bagshaw (ISC) and Kaelan Freund (LAS) with 10 points each. Thormeyer won the 100 & 200 back, Bagshaw did so in the 200 & 400 free, and Freund had wins in the 50 & 100 breast.
