Winter Juniors Finalist Andrew Bernsdorf to Swim for Oakland

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Andrew Bernsdorf of Westerville North High School and New Albany Aquatics Club signed a National Letter of Intent to swim at Oakland University next fall.

“I knew as soon as I stepped on to the campus and meeting the coaching staff at their amazing facility that I wanted to be a part of Oakland Swimming and Diving.  The history of athletic excellence, the camaraderie of the team and incredible coaching staff as well as the excellent academics made the decision incredibly easy.  I want to thank everyone who has helped me get to this point today.  I can not wait to be a part Oakland Swim and Dive, Go Grizzlies!” [sic]

A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and NISCA All-American, Bernsdorf is a 6-time OCC Champion, District Champion in the 200 IM and 500 free, and 3-time All-Ohio honoree. He earned scholar-athlete status every year he was on Westerville North’s swim team. At the 2019 OHSAA Division I Championships last weekend, he finished 3rd in the 200 IM (1:49.29) and 5th in the 500 free (4:33.60). He set a school and district record in the 200 IM on February 15 with 1:49.64, then lowered his PB to 1:49.05 in prelims at the state meet.

In club swimming, Bernsdorf competed at Winter Juniors East in the 200/500 free and 200/400 IM. He dropped 1.1 seconds in the 400 IM to qualify 22nd for the C final, then took another 2.2 seconds off his new PB to finish 19th with 3:54.95. His best times would have added to Oakland’s riches at the 2019 Horizon League Championships where the Golden Grizzlies won the men’s meet by over 200 points. He would have scored in the A finals of the 200 IM and 400 IM and in the B finals of the 200 free and 500 free. He’ll take the reins from senior Patrik Löfgren, who won the 400 IM conference title and placed 4th in the 200 IM, and will create a formidable team with current freshman Colton Phelps, who won the 200 IM and was 3rd in the 400 IM.

His older brother, Matthew Bernsdorf, is a senior on the Ashland University swimming and diving team.
