Video: Santo Condorelli Keeping Things Light Heading Into Rio

  22 Mitch Bowmile | July 26th, 2016

Canadian sprint-star Santo Condorelli sat down with SwimSwam’s Mitch Bowmile on Monday to discuss his upcoming preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Condorelli is currently at the Canadian team’s staging camp in Toronto where the team is coming together for the first time before flying out to Rio on Friday. Condorelli just returned from a training camp with coach Sergio Lopez in Paraguay.

There, Condorelli stated that his goal for the Rio Olympics is a top three finish in the 100m freestyle, a change from his initial goal of a gold medal that he discussed at the Canadian Olympic Trials in April.

With only 11 days to go heading into Rio, Condorelli told SwimSwam that he’s feeling relaxed – a common theme in the atmosphere among Canadian Olympians at the staging camp according to Condorelli.

Condorelli will be entering the Olympic Games as the ninth fastest swimmer in the world this year in the 100m freestyle with the 48.05 he swam at the US Winter Nationals in December.

Last summer Condorelli finished fourth at the World Championships, just shy of his personal best time of 47.98 that he swam at the Pan American Games.

Heading into Rio, Condorelli will be a staple on the Canadian relays and one of Canada’s best chances for an individual medal.

Nice guy. I hope and pray he doesn’t do the “finger” at the Olympics.

Does anyone find it coincidental that santo had his break out season after training in Russia with now Olympic barred athletes?

Santo did not have his breakout season after training in Russia. Santo swam in Russia in 2014 and swam slow. He swam fast after switching his focus to swimming and changing his training. Nice try though.

I don’t like these Swimswam video interviews with weird camera angle that’s not flattering to the people on camera.

Those who said Santo sounded annoyed??
Really?? I didn’t see it at all!

there’ll “definitely be many more Olympics” really? Sounds kinda cocky.

Can’t wait to see what this guy has in his tanks. So exciting seeing a Canadian making a threat for the Podium in the event I left behind. My only regret is that I wasn’t younger because it would be amazing to be on a relay with him. Go Santo! #freethefinger

We could have actually challenged for a medal with Rick Say and maybe Russell or Greenshields

Was hoping he’d show us the middle finger that he throws up so often, guess we’ll have to until he is behind the blocks in Rio!

Santo came a long way training with Coley Stickles at Canyons! 14 months with Canyons and he became a Trials champion and a true Olympic threat. USC to Canyons… I hope Sergio can keep up with what Coley has done to help Santo!

Have to say I agree with the comments of your first swim fan it should be a honour to be with the rest of your team most Canadians have a humbleness about ourselves and pride about being from a great country like Canada
