Versatile Avery Stein Announces Commitment to the University of Missouri for 2024

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

High school junior Avery Stein has announced her commitment to the University of Missouri Tigers for the fall of 2024.

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at the University of Missouri! I want to thank my family and friends, coaches and teammates, and everyone who continuously supported me. I talked to some amazing teams and coaches during my college recruiting process, but in the end Mizzou ended up feeling like the perfect fit. I can’t wait to see what this new adventure brings – once a Tiger, always a Tiger! M-I-Z!!!”!

Stein currently attends Fishers High School in Fishers, Indiana. She recently represented her school at the 2023 Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) State Championships, placing 4th in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.17) and 5th in the 200 IM (2:02.53). Her time in the 100 breaststroke marked a new personal best, improving upon her previous best of 1:03.99 from the 2022 Speedo Winter Junior Championship East last December. At the club level, Stein competes for the Fishers Area Swimming Tigers, where she holds the Junior Nationals cut in the 200 IM with her best time of 2:01.81. In addition to her 200 IM poweress, Stein is a very versatile swimmer in other events, holding Futures cuts in all four strokes.

Best Times SCY:

  • 200 IM – 2:01.81
  • 400 IM – 4:24.98
  • 100 Breaststroke – 1:03.17
  • 200 Breaststroke – 2:17.45
  • 50 Freestyle – 23.76
  • 100 Backstroke – 57.14
  • 100 Butterfly – 57.45

Given her prowess in both the 200 IM and the individual strokes, Stein is a huge pick-up for the Missouri program. Though it is most likely that she will target the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 IM as her main collegiate events, Stein has shown that she could be a valuable swimmer in almost any event, giving her flexibility in her lineup.

With her personal best in the 200 IM, Stein would’ve ranked 6th on Missouri’s roster last season. However, two of the team’s top IM’ers, Katrina Brathwaite and Meredith Rees, will be graduated by the time Stein arrives on Missouri’s campus. Stein’s recent drop in the 100 breaststroke is also a good sign heading into her senior year, as the aforementioned Brathwaite was also the team’s top breaststroker last season.

This past season, Missouri sent three individual swimmers and four different relays to the 2023 NCAA Championships. Rees qualified to represent the team in the 100 backstroke, while Brathwaite and Malin Grosse qualified in the 200 breaststroke. Ultimately, the team did not end up scoring any points at the Championships. At the 2023 SEC Championships, the Tigers finished 11 out of 12 teams, scoring 418 points. Rees was the team’s top swimmer, scoring 38 individual points for the team.

With her commitment, Stein is set to join Maeve DeYoung and Katie Kuehn in Missouri’s class of 2028. Kuehn specializes primarily in the sprint freestyle events, while DeYoung swims backstroke and butterfly. The addition of Stein will allow the class to cover each of the four primary strokes and the IM events.
