Triple event winners Cary Wright and Bonnie Brandon led the Trojan men and Wildcat women to victory at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center, with the USC men outscoring Arizona 182-118 and the Arizona women taking down the USC women 172 to 127. This win pushes the Wildcat women’s record to 6-0 for the season.
Arizona kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay (1:40.90), as their A team touched ahead of USC’s A team (1:41.56). Both relays achieved an NCAA B standard with those finishes. On the men’s side, the Trojan’s A team finished first with a commanding five-second lead ahead of Arizona’s A team (1:29.72).
The Wildcats picked up a 1-2 sweep in the women’s 1000 Free, as sophomore Tjasa Oder (9:58.59) and freshman Claire Lockridge (10:06.32) took first and second, respectively. USC freshman Pawel Furtek (9:16.93) touched just ahead of Arizona freshman Nick Hogsed (9:18.25) in the men’s 1000. Hogsed was followed closely behind by sophomore teammate Ty Fowler (9:20.92).
Wildcat junior Bonnie Brandon took her first event of the meet with a win and an NCAA B cut in the 200 Free (1:47.32). Her senior teammate Elizabeth Pepper touched in second (1:49.51), just ahead of sophomore Trojan Chelsea Chenault (1:50.73). Southern California completed a 1-2 sweep on the men’s side, with sophomore Dylan Carter (1:36.65) taking home the win and an NCAA B cut in the process. His teammate Redd Malone (1:39.88) touched second ahead of Arizona sophomore Thane Maudslien (1:40.38).
The Trojan women scored serious points in the 100 Back with a 1-2-3-4 sweep, led by USC freshman Hannah Weiss (54.41), who also nabbed an NCAA B cut with her win. She was followed by USC junior Kendyl Stewart (55.41), sophomore Diana Chang (56.10) and sophomore Sidney Cooke (56.31). On the men’s side, senior Trojan Luca Spinazzola led a 1-2-3 USC charge (48.21) ahead of teammates Ralf Tribuntsov (48.23) and Jon Knox (50.37). Both Spinazzola and Tribuntsov took home NCAA B cuts as well.
The Arizona women responded with a 1-2 finish by sophomore Sara Borendame (1:01.88) and junior Emma Schoettmer (1:02.09) in the 100 Breast. Both girls continued the pattern and brought home two NCAA B cuts. Wildcat senior Kevin Cordes made his 2014-2015 college season debut with a win and an NCAA B cut in the 100 Breast (54.19). His teammate, junior Andrew Sovero also brought home an NCAA B cut with his second-place finish (54.40) ahead of USC junior Ridge Altman (56.59).
Junior Trojan Jasmine Tosky took her first of two events with a win and an NCAA B cut in the 200 Fly (1:58.46) ahead of Wildcat senior Elizabeth Pepper (2:00.30) and USC junior Lucy Worrall (2:05.50). Senior Trojan Cary Wright won his first of three events in the men’s 200 Fly (1:49.10), just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of sophomore teammate Michael Domagala (1:49.11). Arizona junior Michael Meyer followed up close behind for third in 1:49.33.
The Wildcat women picked up a 1-2 sweep in the 50 Free, as Arizona teammates Taylor Schick (23.16) and Paige Kremer (23.51) touched ahead of USC junior Kasia Wilk (23.67). On the men’s side, Arizona senior Bradley Tandy swam a sub-20 for the win (19.98), as well as an NCAA B cut. Sophomore Trojan Dylan Carter followed up for second in 20.44.
Divers Haley Ishimatsu and Samantha Adams completed a Trojan sweep of the 1-meter platform, scoring 315.60 and 302.18, respectively. Arizona junior Rafael Quintero (332.55) outscored USC junior Collin Pollard (315.60) for the win in the men’s event.
The Wildcat duo of Taylor Schick (50.13)and Paige Kremer (50.69) repeated a 1-2 cover in the 100 Free for a sweep of the sprint events. In the men’s 100 Free, USC sophomore Santo Condorelli touched almost two full seconds ahead of the rest of the field (43.67), picking up an NCAA B cut. Wildcat senior Bradley Tandy followed up for second (45.26) ahead of USC sophomore David Morgan (46.36).
Arizona’s Bonnie Brandon picked up her second win in the 200 Back, swimming an NCAA B-worthy time of 1:56.71. She finished ahead of a 2-3 Trojan charge completed by USC junior Kendyl Stewart (1:59.32) and freshman Hannah Weiss (2:00.78). Senior Cary Wright took his second win of the meet in the men’s event (1:48.11), touching just seven one-hundredths of a second ahead of freshman teammate Ralf Tribuntsov (1:48.18).
Wildcat junior Emma Schoettmer (2:12.54) and her sophomore teammate Sara Borendame (2:14.30) completed a 1-2 Arizona sweep in the 200 Breast. USC senior Andrea Kropp followed up for third in 2:14.65, with all three swimmers achieving the NCAA B standard with their swims. Arizona senior Kevin Cordes picked up his second win (2:00.49) and his teammate Andrew Sovero repeated a second-place finish in the 200 Breast in 2:02.95 to complete a Wildcat sweep of the Breaststroke events.
Bonnie Brandon took home her third win in the 500 Free (4:48.76) ahead of teammate Tjasa Oder (4:49.66) and junior Trojan Joanna Stenkvist (4:55.80). USC freshman Pawel Furtek picked up his second win of the meet in the men’s 500 Free (4:29.30), touching ahead of teammate Reed Malone (4:30.42) and Arizona freshman Nick Hogsed (4:31.28).
USC junior Kendyl Stewart grabbed an NCAA B cut in the 100 Fly with her winning time of 53.90. Arizona teammates Elizabeth Pepper and Katja Hajdinjak (56.03) completed a 2-3 charge for the Wildcats. The Southern California men completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 Fly, led by sophomore Michael Domagala (48.88). His teammates Santo Condorelli (48.98) and Dakota Hodgson (50.42) followed up for second and third.
The Arizona men and women both took home wins in the 3-meter platform, with senior Samantha Pickens (313.88) and junior Rafael Quintero (360.23) outscoring the field.
USC’s Jasmine Tosky won her second event of the meet in the 400 IM, breaking the NCAA B standard with a 4:18.10. Arizona sophomore Tjasa Oder (4:21.72) followed up for second ahead of USC junior Andrea Kropp (4:23.17). USC senior Cary Wright took yet another event for the Trojans in the men’s 400 IM (3:59.36) ahead of a 2-3-4-5 Wildcat charge, led by junior Michael Meyer (4:00.54), with his teammate Nick Thorne taking third in 4:04.07.
The Arizona women took home a win and an NCAA B cut in the 400 Free Relay (3:21.81) to finish off the meet, with the USC A relay following up for second in 3:26.21. On the men’s side, USC’s A relay took home the final win (2:57.57) ahead of the Wildcat A relay (3:01.43).
