DAVIDSON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville swimming & diving team remained unbeaten on Saturday as it defeated Gardner-Webb, 236-48, and host Davidson by a score of 155-145 to improve to 4-0 on the 2022-23 season.
“We knew this would be a close meet versus Davidson,” said UNC Asheville Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins. “Our staff predicted the last event could determine the outcome and so it did!! The team rallied using each other’s energy to stay motivated. Our divers competed new dives on both boards and the combined effort led to two wins on the day.”
In addition to the team success, junior Jade Canady shattered the program records in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with point totals of 243.83 and 241.65, respectively.
“The diving program is still very new, but we are progressing so fast thanks to the dedication of Coach Matthew Macon,” said Canady. “I cannot wait to see what my teammates and I will accomplish in the future. When I began diving at UNC Asheville, I could never have imagined progressing this far into my diving career. Breaking these records proves we have become a competitive dive team and we will continue to improve.”
In addition to Asheville’s work on the boards, the Bulldog swimmers also did their part in the pair of victories. Overall, the Bulldogs won eight individual events on the day. However, perhaps the most critical win came in the day’s final event (4×100-yard freestyle relay) as the foursome of Nora Segurola Larrinaga, Anna Marcotti, Abby Parks, and Delaney Carlton paced the field with a time of 3:28.78 to clinch Asheville’s win over Davidson.
Seugrola (100-yard back – 56.81, 200-yard back – 2:03.64), Carlton (50-yard free – 23.33, 100-yard free – 51.44), Riley Edmundson (200-yard fly – 2:03.03, 200-yard IM – 2:08.28) all won a pair of individual events to help Asheville’s cause as well. Marcotti (200-yard free – 1:53.28) and Beatrice Cocconcelli (200-yard breaststroke – 2:22.89) each picked up event victories too.
The Bulldogs will be back in action at two different meets from November 17-20. Asheville’s divers will compete at the Wolfpack Diving Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. from November 17-19. The swimmers, meanwhile, will take part in the Fall Frenzy Invitational from November 18-20 in Charlotte, N.C.

DAVIDSON — The first home meet of the season resulted in numerous individual and team wins for the Davidson Wildcats Saturday afternoon in Cannon Pool.
The Davidson men posted a 190-104 win over Gardner-Webb, while the Wildcat women beat Gardner-Webb 241-51 and narrowly lost to UNC Asheville 155-145.
“Both teams were outstanding in front of a packed house today,” said coach John Young. “I’m so appreciative of the support we had at home. The men brought their ‘A’ game against a Gardner-Webb team we knew would be better than what they’d shown this season. They really competed well. The women’s performances were impressive all day. Kate Pottle continues to light it up, and we had strong swims from all the classes, really. I’m really excited for what we can do in a few weeks when we get to Bucknell.”
Freshman Liam McDonough led all Wildcats with three individual wins for the men. He won the 100 back (50.76), 200 back (1:53.52) and 200 IM (1:56.10) in his home debut.
Dylan Felt added wins in the 200 fly (1:51.90), where the Wildcats went 1-2-3, and also won the 500 free (4:32.94), while Ben McClain won the 100 and 200 frees in 51.44 and 1:40.76, respectively.
Miles Charles (100 fly, 50.08), Andrew Schou (100 breast, 57.44) and Jackson McDonald (1,000 free, 9:49.26) touched first in their events, as did the 400 free relay unit of Felt, Guil Ware, Ian Brann and McClain (3:06.86).
James Gourlay (1M, 246.80) and Ben Cutforth (3M, 282.60) had the top scores in diving.
The Davidson women, competing simultaneously against both Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville, topped both opponents in seven events and started strong with a victorious 200 medley relay, as Leah Sandock, Anna Newman, Shelby Stanley and Martha Tripsa touched in 1:44.87.
Diver Annica Valmassei made sure the Wildcats got the needed top points in the 1M (260.48) and 3M (261.68), while Pottle swam first in the 500 free (5:04.15).
Sylvia Stewart-Bates won the 1,000 free in 10:29.24, while Stanley won the 100 fly in 56.48. Newman added a win in the 100 breast (1:05.09), and Young gave a tip of the cap to Tripsa, who finished second among 14 competitors in the 50 free with a time of 24.16.

The Wildcats will compete in the Bucknell Invitational Nov. 18-20.
