UMBC Dominates Saint Peters, VMI For Pair of Sweeps

BALTIMORE – The UMBC Women’s Swimming & Diving team made an emphatic return to the pool as it defeated both VMI and Saint Peter’s on Saturday at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.

The Retrievers defeated VMI 222-72 and beat Saint Peter’s 237-56.

The program celebrated Faculty Appreciation Day by welcoming their favorite professors for a pool deck ceremony prior to the meet. Dr. Conor Donnan (American Studies), C. NaTasha Richburg (Information Systems), Guenet Abraham (Visual Arts) and Dr.Pamela Rakshan Rouhakhtar (Psychology) were all honored.

“Great job today in the pool followed by a few amazing weeks of training,” said head coach Matt Donovan. “The real stars of the day were the professors that we had the honor to recognize before the meet.  They are the reason there is the Student in Student-Athlete. We are so proud to dedicate our success in the pool to them and the countless hours they put in to make the UMBC community the success that it is.”

The meet started off with a bang as UMBC’s 200 Medley Relay team of Bruna de PaduaElze BielskuteNicol Davanzo and Ashley Gutshall won by over six seconds.

Kolby Reese then won the 1000 Free in a time of 10:57.67, nearly 11 seconds better than second place, followed by Breanna Smith (1:58.12) and Makaela Hill (1:59.70) taking the top two spots in the 200 Free.

In the 100 Back, de Padua (59.05) and Ella Nadeau (1:02.52) went one-tw0, before Hailey Weigand won the 100 Breaststroke in 1:10.77. Gutshall returned to the top of the podium in both the 50 Free (24.12) and the 200 Back (2:14.55).

Hill (53.09) and Claire Oettinger (54.20) took gold and silver in the 100 Free, while Bielskute (2:25.85), Ula Parrill (2:28.59), Nicole Lopez Kohlmann (2:33.31) and Weigand (2:33.31) took the top four spots in the 200 Breaststroke.

Nadeau won the 500 Free by nearly nine seconds as she touched the wall in 5:24.78, and Davanzo then won the 200 IM in 2:12.69.

The 400 Free Relay team of Bielskute, Oettinger, Hill and de Padua easily took gold by over seven seconds (3:38.07) to close the meet.

In the diving portion, Ember Stennett (254.33), Joella Mills (227.10), Alicia Buteau (197.70) and Isabella Evers (188.18) took the top four spots in the 3 Meter dive. Mills (227.93) and Buteau (215.55) then went one-two in the 1 Meter.

The Retrievers have a week off before a three day meet at Bucknell.

The meet started off well as UMBC’s 200 Medley Relay team of Ryan HardingChristian ColemanOliver Gassmann and Bode Neale took gold in 1:33.33.

Eric Kim (57.61) and Thyn Van Lier) took the top two spots in the 100 Breaststroke, while Max Casey-Bolanos erased a two second deficit in the final 50 yards to win the 200 Fly in 1:56.93.

Harding then won the 50 Free in 21.35, followed by Boris Milev taking gold in the 100 Free in 46.45.

Kim (2:08.06) and Max Trias (2:11.53) took the top two spots in the 200 Breaststroke, before Trias (1:57.60), Milev (1:57.62) and James Tao swept the podium in the 200 IM.

Milev then was the anchor leg in the 400 Free Relay as he chased down the VMI leaders and out-touched them at the wall in 3:07.86 to give him, Harding, Gassmann and Neale the victory to close out the meet.

Isaac Poole once again swept the diving competition, winning gold in both the 1 Meter (335.25) and 3 Meter (272.03). Andy VinesAnders Logas and Kaleb Cave took spots 2-4 in the 1 Meter, while Logas, Vines, Grant Moore and Cave went 2-5 in the 3 Meter.

The Retrievers have a week off before a three day meet at Bucknell.

BALTIMORE, Md. – VMI Women’s Swimming & Diving earned a massive win on the road against Saint Peter’s at the UMBC Aquatic Complex Saturday afternoon.

With the narrow 142-140 victory over the Peacocks, the Keydets win their first meet over an NCAA Division I opponent in nine seasons. VMI has also posted triple-digit results in back-to-back weekends. With the men also earning a win over Saint Peter’s, it’s the first time in 10 years that both teams beat an D-I team on the same day.

VMI freshmen Emerson Cosner and Mackenzie Byrne lifted the Keydets to some big point totals. Cosner secured second in the 500 freestyle (5:33.60) along with third in the 200 freestyle (2:00.41) before winning the 200 butterfly (2:15.18). Cosner’s 200 freestyle mark is a VMI top 10 time. Byrne won the 100 butterfly (1:00.42), nabbed second place in the 50 freestyle (25.08), and tallied a third-place mark in the 100 freestyle (54.65).

The Keydets also got some insurance from Noelle Tong who placed third in the 100 backstroke (1:02.91) and Walden Wilder who secured second in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.50).

On the boards, Isabelle Haer set a new personal record in the one-meter dive (212.10) with Ollie Hobbs earning a fifth-place mark in the three-meter (149.10).

In total, the Keydets tallied 10 event wins over the Peacocks. VMI also took on fellow America East foe, UMBC, but fell to the Retrievers, 222-72.

The Keydets return to the VMI Aquatic Center for the Keydet Invite on November 15-16. Friday’s events will begin at 5 p.m. while Saturday will start at 10 a.m.

BALTIMORE, Md. – VMI Men’s Swimming & Diving split its weekend matchups between UMBC and Saint Peter’s Saturday afternoon at UMBC Aquatic Complex.

The Keydets picked up a dominating 231-61 victory over the Peacocks but dropped its battle against the Retrievers, 178-121, to move to 2-2 on the young season. With the women also earning a win over Saint Peter’s, it’s the first time in 10 years that both teams beat an NCAA Division I team on the same day.

Some Keydet freshmen made some noise in the tri-meet. Stephen Russell secured first place and a new VMI top 10 time in the 1,000 freestyle (9:55.80) for a new season best followed by a victory finish in the 500 freestyle (4:49.37). Jack Mills tallied a first-place mark and VMI top 10 time in the 200 freestyle (1:40.86) before earning first in the 100 butterfly (51.76). He also recorded second in the 100 freestyle (46.70).

Sam Castle swam to victory in the 100 backstroke (51.44) and 200 backstroke (1:55.42) for two new season records. Joshua Wolf finished in third place in the 100 backstroke (53.28) while Sam Calder reached third place in the 200 freestyle (1:44.30).

Caleb Wolf (1:57.04) and Kayleb Eldridge (1:57.64) went second and third, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. Wolf would go on to finish third in the 500 freestyle (4:52.85). Matthew Picard nabbed second place in the 50 freestyle (21.84) followed by a third-place mark in the 100 freestyle (47.00) for a new season best. Ethan Griffith set a new personal record in the 200 breaststroke (1:12.71).

The 400 freestyle relay group of Picard, Mills, Castle, and Calder took home second place (3:08.17)

In total, the Keydets had 12 event wins over Saint Peter’s and six event wins over UMBC.

The Keydets return to the VMI Aquatic Center for the Keydet Invite November 15-16. Friday’s events will begin at 5 p.m. while Saturday will start at 10 a.m.

Baltimore, Md.- Saint Peter’s Swimming & Diving competed in a double dual meet against University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Virginia Military Institute.

Saint Peter’s Men’s Swimming & Diving lost to UMBC, 239-54. Women’s Swimming & Diving lost to UMBC by a score of 237-56.

In the Women’s 1,000-Yard Freestyle, Maddie McKinney placed second in the heat with an 11:08.58 official time. Juan Nunez had a third-place finish in the Men’s 1,000-Yard Freestyle with a final time of 9:58.47. Saint Peter’s sophomore Victor Fuentes placed second in the Men’s 100-Yard Breaststroke heat. Fuentes swam a final time of 59.76 seconds.

Aleksa Vujosevic came up just short of a top-three placement in the speed race of the Men’s 50-Yard Freestyle. Vujosevic finished less than one second behind UMBC’s Ryan Harding, who won the heat.
Saint Peter’s had success in the Women’s 200-Yard Backstroke with two of the three top three finishers in the Women’s 200-Yard Backstroke with second-place Francesca Solano-Vargas and third-place Makayla Noe.
