Texas A&M’s Mauro Castillo Downs Mexican 200 Breast National Record

Texas A&M junior Mauro Castillo has broken the Mexican record in the 200 breast with his time of 2:13.50 from this past weekend.

Competing at a Senior Circuit Championships in Mansfield, Texas, Castillo won the 200 breast by almost fourteen full seconds.

Splits: 30.55 – 1:04.51 (33.96) – 1:38.74 (34.23) – 2:13.50 (34.76)

Castillo held solid splits, getting out in 1:04.5 and coming home a hundredth under 1:09. His 2:13.50 has since been named the official Mexican national record.

Coming into the meet with a 2:15.28, Castillo was 2:16.33 during prelims, just over a second off of his lifetime best. His 2:13.50 in finals marked a drop of almost two full seconds. This past season as a sophomore with the Texas A&M Aggies, Castillo finished 24th in the 100 breast and scored in the 200 breast, placing 10th overall.

This is one of two national records that Castillo was a part of last weekend. He, along with Juan RochaMateo Gonzalez, and Angel Martinez toppled the Mexican national record in the 400 medley relay at that same meet. Castillo split a 1:01.05 as the breaststroke leg of that relay.

This upcoming season, Rocha will be a senior with the Aggies, while Castillo will be a junior and Gonzalez and Martinez will be sophomores.
