Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Max Buff has announced his intention to swim and study at North Carolina State University starting next fall.
“I am extremely excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at North Carolina State University. I would love to give a huge thanks to my family for helping me through this process. I would also like to thank Coach Brent and Coach Liam for helping me get in the position that I am today. Lastly I would to thank Coach Dan and the rest of the staff at @packswimdive for giving me this wonderful opportunity that I could have only dreamed of. GO PACK!! ♦️🐺”
Buff hails from Bowling Green, Ohio, and like his older brother Scotty Buff (a sophomore All-American at Florida) did before him, Max swims for Saint Francis De Sales High School and the Greater Toledo Aquatic Club. Mainly a fly and back specialist, he had a big meet last December at Winter Juniors East, where finaled in the 100 fly (3rd), 200 back (10th), 100 back (13th), and 50 free (16th) and he swam all best times.
Buff wrapped up his prep career in February at the OHSAA Division I State Championships, where he won the 100 fly (47.21) and was runner-up in the 100 back with a new lifetime best (47.74). A month later, at NCSA Spring Championships, he took another .4 off his 100 back PB and lowered his lifetime bests in the 200 back (1:43.67), 50 fly (21.70), and 200 fly (1:45.58). He placed 5th in all four events. He also competed in the 100 fly and 50 free, finishing 2nd and 16th, respectively.
Best SCY times:
- 200 back – 1:43.67
- 100 back – 47.37
- 100 fly – 46.97
- 200 fly – 1:45.58
- 50 free – 20.22
Buff will join the Wolfpack with #11 Max Carlsen, #17 Gavin Keogh, “Best of the Rest” Ian Stutts, Aaron Davidson, and Tyler Bardak. He will overlap two years with NC State’s top backstroker from 2024-25, All-American Quintin McCarty (44.56).

That’s going to be one busy traveling family! 3 kids at different D1 schools!
Maximus Buff. From the 1st day you floated in the warm pool at BGSU I knew you’d be an absolute beast of a breastroker! “We did it”. Despite your family genes making your feet in a design more suitable for dolphins we overcame that together. I tip my hat to your determination and tenacity…wink wink. On a real level though Max you are a living legend and we all look forward to so many years of fast swimming, funny one liners, and great stories. Right place right time. GO PACK!
Congrats Max!
This kid is the goat.
I look at who they recruit and how they do at NCAAs and have to think Braden H. is a better recruiter than coach.
A handful of men were just cut at state, with some incoming being told they may not have a spot. Didn’t realize there was room for more in this class.
Welcome to the grant house era of college swimming… Happening everywhere including UVA
