Shayna Jack Joins Fray at 2016 U.S. Open (Updated Psych Sheets)

2016 U.S. Open Championships

A new version of the psych sheets and entry lists for the 2016 U.S. Open Swimming Championships that begin next week in Minneapolis have been released, and one big name from down under has been added.

17-year old Shayna Jack joins the fray as, among other things, the top seed in the women’s 50 and 100 meter freestyles (she’ll also swim the 200 free).

Jack has had big success in the past racing in the United States, including at this same U.S. Open meet in 2012, where at just 13 years old, swimming among true veteran fields of Americans (which this year’s is not as much), she placed in the top 5 of both the 50 and 100 freestyles.

At this year’s Australian Olympic Trials, Jack was one of a number of unfortunate casualties of the powerhouse sprinters that are the Campbell sisters -the world’s best sprinting duo. Jack was 3rd in the 50 free (about 7-tenths of a second behind Bronte for 2nd) and 8th in the 100 free (adding three-tenths after finishing 6th in the semi-finals, which may have earned her a spot on an Olympic relay).

She’s one of a number of pertinent Australians who will make the trip to Minneapolis for this meet. Other well-practiced swimmers include:

  • 2014 Youth Olympic Games bronze medalist Nicholas Brown
  • 2015 World University Games champion Holly Barratt (50 backstroke)
  • 2016 Australian Olympic Trials 6th-place finisher in the 100 free, and son of Mark Stockwell and Tracy Caulkins, William Stockwell
  • Olympic Trials finalist Jessica Hansen
  • Matthew Wilson
  • Alexander Graham
  • Blake Jones
  • Zac Incerti
  • Sian Whitaker
  • Tommy Sucipto

For all that Jack is the focus of this article, it may be others who are actually closer to breaking through to the senior team.

– Stockwell just missed the 4×100 relay & arguably may’ve been a better selection than at least one who was.
– Whittaker was 3rd in 200back at Trials at 2.07low and sub minute in the 100back. With Hocking retiring post Rio, she has to be seen as being at the front of the queue.
– Wilson won 200brs at 2.09, just outside the AUS QT & his non selection was questioned by some.
– Hansen was 3rd in 100brs at Trials and broke 1.07 in semis
