San Diego State Hires TCU Grad Assistant Ben Biefnes

San Diego State University has hired a replacement for Brendon Bray, who left the program earlier this year to become the new head coach at North Texas. Biefnes has bounced around between a couple of college programs as a graduate assistant after swimming at TCU for four seasons.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –

San Diego State Head Swimming and Diving Coach Mike Shrader today announced the hiring of former TCU graduate assistant Ben Biefnes as the Aztecs’ new assistant coach. He replaces Brendon Bray, who recently accepted the job as head coach at North Texas.

Biefnes spent the last two seasons at TCU where he worked with the breaststroke and IM groups while assisting in team coordination and recruiting. During his two years with the Horned Frogs, 40 school records were broken with all of the women’s IM records broken multiple times. In 2012, he helped the TCU men to a second-place finish and the women to a third-place finish in their first year in the Big 12.

The Aurora, Colo., native spent the 2010-11 year at Carthage College (Kenosha, Wis.) as a grad assistant working with the breaststroke and IM groups as well as helping coordinate dry land activities. While at Carthage, the men’s squad won its fourth straight CCIW conference title while the women’s team finished 10th at the NCAA Championships.

“We had tremendous interest in our assistant coaching position here at SDSU,” commented Shrader, “and one name kept standing out – Ben Biefnes.”

“Through his recruiting and coaching experience as well as his high level of integrity, Ben continually impressed the committee. The good Lord has really blessed us in being able to hire Ben and we are very excited about the future.”

Biefnes attended TCU where he was a swimmer from fall 2006 to spring 2010. As a senior he captained the men’s team that won the Mountain West Conference dual meet title. A breaststroke and IM specialist, he was awarded the Unselfish Team Player Award in 2007, the Dedication Award in 2008 and the Most Valuable Contributor Award in 2010. In addition, he was named TCU’s Dutch Meyer Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010.

During the summer of 2012, he worked as a camp counselor at the University of Texas Longhorn Swim Camp and the Nike Boys and Girls Swim Camp in Norman, Okla.

The 25-year-old Biefnes is a 2010 graduate of TCU with a bachelor’s of science degree in communications and psychology. He received a masters in liberal arts from TCU in 2013.

The above is a press release written by the media staff at San Diego State University.
