Rice senior Alicia Caldwell won two individual events and swam on a winning relay to help pace the Owls’ swim team to a 136-100 Conference USA victory over visiting North Texas Friday evening at the Competition Pool. The dual meet win was just the right gift on Rice head coach Seth Huston‘s birthday.
Caldwell was sound and solid as the Owls won eight of the meet’s 11 swim events. The senior from Sydney, Australia, swam the lead leg of Rice’s 200-yard medley relay that touched first with a time of 1:45.00. She then swept both the 100- and 200-freestyle events with times of 52.08 and 1:52.29.
Other Rice individual wins included Lauren Rhodes in the 50-freestyle (23.64), Rylee Linhardt in the 200-backstroke (2:04.72), Kaitlin Benjamin in the 200-butterfly (2:08.79), Kaitlyn Swinney in the 400-individual medley (4:23.82) and Hanna Huston in the 1,000-freestyle (10:18.59). The Blue & Gray in fact posted a total of seven 1-2 finishes in the meet.

The North Texas swimming and diving team fell to Rice, 137-99, on Friday afternoon at the Rice Aquatics Center. The Owls took first place in the first eight swimming events, and the Mean Green could not claw back.
“Overall, we put together some solid races today,” North Texas head coach Brittany Roth said. “Rice is an excellent team, and we knew this meet was going to be a fight. I’m proud of how our girls continued to fight throughout the meet.”
Freshman Leigh Faires McGee led the late comeback efforts with a pair of wins. McGee claimed the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.32, and she helped the 400-yard freestyle relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 3:30.83.
“I was impressed that Leigh Faires was able to match her time from a week ago, when she swam the 1000 right before it,” Roth said. “It was a close race, and she fought the whole way through it. The 400 free relay team also did a great job of fighting to the finish. These girls are working hard and progressing each week.”
Senior Claudia Kitching contributed to the rally with a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking a time of 2:18.37.
“She has really come into her own in the 200 breast, and she’s showing her growth from week to week as she continues to learn from her previous performances.”
On the boards, junior Averie Ruiz took the top spot in the one-meter dive, and freshman Meghan Millerposted the best score in the three-meter event.
