The Week 7 slate included 58 matches, with 16 teams mentioned in the CWPA Top 25 poll in action. The schedule, which featured tournaments in Pennsylvania, Michigan and California among other events, produced just one upset and two overtime affairs.
Both matches that went to extra time were at the Grove City Invitational, in Grove City, Pennsylvania, with one coming on Friday and one on Saturday.
Of the 12 contests between teams ranked or receiving votes in the poll, none were decided by less than three goals, even RV Cal State East Bay’s 11-8 upset of #25 Cal Baptist.
VMI extended its current win streak to nine matches with a 4-0 showing at the Grove City Invitational and a 19-2 Sunday road win at Wittenberg. The nine-game win streak is the longest in program history. Previously the Keydets’ longest stretch was six games in 2017 and 2018.
Upsets
- RV Cal State East Bay def. #25 Cal Baptist 11-8 – East Bay jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, thanks in part to two goals by Ivanna Anderson, including a penalty, and never looked back. After trailing 6-4 at the half, the Lancers pulled within one twice in the third quarter and twice in the fourth, last at 9-8 on a Kira O’Donnell goal with 2:45 left in the game. Maci Taylor and Payton Bosque capped the upset for East Bay. Tahnee Trew, Adrien Van Dyke, Anderson and Bosque each scored two goals for East Bay, while O’Donnell led CBU with a hat trick.
Overtime
- VMI def. Gannon 11-10 OT – Gannon led 3-2 after the first quarter thanks to two Nicole Wiemken goals, but the teams were level at 4 at the half. Emma Noble, Genevieve Petrassi and McKenna Imset gave VMI a 7-5 edge with 5:09 to play in the third quarter. The teams tied at 7 and 8, before a Kiara Anguiano powerplay score gave VMI the slight 9-8 advantage with 2 seconds left in the period. Kelly Fehr knotted the score at 9-all and a Wiemken penalty (3:01) put Gannon back on top. Sydney Shettleroe sent the game to overtime, scoring with 2:10 to go. In the first overtime, the teams combined for six shots, but came up empty. Emma Perez put in the game winner for VMI with 49 ticks left in the second extra period. Seven Keydets scored in the game with Petrassi, Noble, Imset and Shettelroe managing two apiece. Wiemken put in four goals to lead Gannon.
- Wittenberg def. Grove City 17-15 OT – Savannah Phillips buried eight goals as the Tigers moved past the host Wolverines at the Grove City Invitational on Saturday. Kailey Cordova also added a hat trick for Wittenberg. Reese Trauger netted a career-high six goals and Elaine Miller added five, but it was not enough for Grove City.
