The men’s 50m breaststroke final on day 2 of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup stop in Shanghai was a tight battle to the wall, with China’s Qin Haiyang coming out on top.
25-year-old Qin stopped the clock at 25.38 to get the edge over top seed Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus, competing as an independent athlete, who settled for silver in 25.51.
Qin’s teammate Sun Jiajun was the 3rd place finisher in 25.79 as the only other sub-26-second swimmer among the field.
GOLD – Qin Haiyang (CHN) – 25.38
SILVER – Ilya Shymanovich (NIA) – 25.51
BRONZE – Sun Jiajun (CHN) – 25.79
Qin’s time tonight checked in as a new lifetime best, Chinese national and Asian continental record.
Entering this competition, Qinn’s career-quickest rested at the 25.81 he produced for 4th place at the 2022 Short Course World Championshps in Melbourne, Australia.
Flashforward to tonight, however, and Qin hacked .43 off that mark to grab the gold. His time handily surpassed Sun’s former Chinese and Asian record of 25.72 put up just last month at the Chinese Short Course Championships
Qin inserts himself into the list of all-time top performers in slot #5, tying American Olympic medalist Nic Fink.

- Nic Fink (USA) – 25.38, 2022 &Â Qin Haiyang (CHN) – 25.38, 2024
Qin is the current World Record holder in the LCM 200 breast with the 2:05.48 he turned in at the 2023 World Championships.
He had a relatively disappointing 2024 Olympic Games, however, settling for 7th in the 100m breast (59.50) and 10th in the 200m breast (2:09.96) despite entering Paris as a heavy favorite medal contender in both races.
Since there isn’t a live recap for world cup up yet, it’s worth noting that Noe Ponti just broke the WR in the heats of the 50 fly
This might be the wildest thing Swimswam’s ever been behind on. Not faulting them, but the one time I can remember them being behind on the live recap, there’s a WR in prelims. That’s funny
Congrats, Well done
Would be nice if he could legitimately beat that 24.95 but he might not be able to do as many fly kicks at a WC event 🙂
The Drugyang can only perform in Asia LOL
