Qin Haiyang Posts 25.38 Chinese, Asian Record In 50 Breast At World Cup Shanghai

2024 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP-SHANGHAI

The men’s 50m breaststroke final on day 2 of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup stop in Shanghai was a tight battle to the wall, with China’s Qin Haiyang coming out on top.

25-year-old Qin stopped the clock at 25.38 to get the edge over top seed Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus, competing as an independent athlete, who settled for silver in 25.51.

Qin’s teammate Sun Jiajun was the 3rd place finisher in 25.79 as the only other sub-26-second swimmer among the field.

GOLD – Qin Haiyang (CHN) – 25.38
SILVER – Ilya Shymanovich (NIA) – 25.51
BRONZE – Sun Jiajun (CHN) – 25.79

Qin’s time tonight checked in as a new lifetime best, Chinese national and Asian continental record.

Entering this competition, Qinn’s career-quickest rested at the 25.81 he produced for 4th place at the 2022 Short Course World Championshps in Melbourne, Australia.

Flashforward to tonight, however, and Qin hacked .43 off that mark to grab the gold. His time handily surpassed Sun’s former Chinese and Asian record of 25.72 put up just last month at the Chinese Short Course Championships

Qin inserts himself into the list of all-time top performers in slot #5, tying American Olympic medalist Nic Fink.
