Qin Haiyang Kicks Off 2025 With Big-Time 2:07.44 200 Breast (Video)

2025 CHINESE NATIONAL SPRING SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The highlight of day five of the 2025 Chinese National Spring Swimming Championships came in the men’s 200m breaststroke.

World record holder Qin Haiyang unleashed a time of 2:07.44 to beat the field by well over 2 seconds en route to grabbing gold.

The next-closest competitor was reigning world champion Dong Zhihao who finished in 2:10.12 for the silver.

As for Qin, he owns the WR with the monster 2:05.48 he put on the books at the 2023 World Championships.

At the time, that rendered him only the 2nd man in history to delve under the 2:06 barrier. Aussie Zac Stubblety-Cook was the first to accomplish the feat, courtesy of the 2:05.95 logged at the 2022 Australian National Championships.

Since then, four-time Olympic gold medalist Leon Marchand joined the party with the 2:05.85 notched to top the podium last year in Paris.

Qin had a disappointing Olympics, missing out on medals despite being a favorite in the breaststroke. He placed 7th in the 100m (59.50) and missed the 200m breast final entirely, settling for 1oth place in 2:09.96.

Qin now ranks 2nd in the world with the nation’s World Championship Trials coming up in May.

Add in ZSC and Fallon throwing the kitchen sink trying to run them down the last 50 and you have potentially one of the best men’s swimming races to look forward to at worlds

At the World Championships in Singapore, he even has the potential to win up to five gold medals. However, the probabilities from highest to lowest are as follows: men’s medley relay > 100m breaststroke > 50m breaststroke > mixed medley relay > 200m breaststroke. At the very least, he will bring home four medals.

If Peaty is not racing Qin’s most likely gold should come from the 100 rather than the medley

I think China’s got the medley in the bag this year, but maybe Russia will keep it close? I couldn’t even tell you who’s going to be on the medley for the US except probably Alexy

We can look forward to his performance at the Chinese National Championships and the World Championships. There is no doubt that Tan is making a comeback.
At the World Championships in Singapore, he even has the potential to win up to five gold medals. However, the probabilities from highest to lowest are as follows: men medley relay > 100m breaststroke > 50m breaststroke > mixed medley relay > 200m breaststroke. Maybe the 200 breast final can finally live up to its hype with Qin, Marchand, ZSC, and Fallon
