Phoenix Swimming flyer James Allen joins UMASS – Amherst for upcoming season

Massachusetts butterflyer James Allen won’t have to move far to continue his swimming career in college, as he’s committed to swim for the University of Massachusetts – Amherst beginning next fall.

Allen competes for Phoenix Swimming in Massachusetts and has committed to UMASS – Amherst, according to the New England Swimming College Commitments page.

Allen is best as a butterflyer, but also has some upside in the freestyles and IM races.

Allen’s Top Times

  • 100 fly – 49.69
  • 200 fly – 1:50.82

His 100 fly would have ranked #1 on Amherst’s roster this past season, and his 200 fly would have netted him #2 overall on the team, behind graduating senior Hao Luong.

Plus, Allen’s best time of 47.09 in the 100 free would have put him fifth on the team last year, meaning he could turn out to be a key relay piece moving forward as well.

The UMASS Minutemen are coming off an exciting season in which they came back from a large deficit over the final day to win the Atlantic-10 title. UMASS erased a 45.5-point margin to overcome St. Bonaventure and ultimately win by 19.5.

Adding Allen should help the Minutemen reload after graduating Luong, the only butterflyer to score for the team at Atlantic-10s last season.
