Pennsylvania State Champion Maura Fluehr Commits to Penn State University

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Pennsylvania State Champion Maura Fluehr has verbally committed to Pennsylvania State University as part of their class of 2025. She is the Nittany Lions’ first announced commitment in the class of 2021.

Fluehr swam a 55.69 in the 100 fly at March’s AA State Championship meet, for the state’s smallest schools, to win the state title. Her time would have placed 3rd (behind a pair of seniors) at the AAA meet.

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 23.87
  • 100 free – 51.30
  • 200 free – 1:51.49
  • 100 fly – 55.69

Fluehr, who is very sprint-focused, dropped a second-and-a-half in the 100 fly between her freshman and sophomore state championship meets to win the state title in that event.

But sprint depth is exactly what the Nittany Lions needs to build if they hope to contend in a Big Ten conference that is getting deeper and deeper every season. Senior Maddie Hart carries the butterfly torch for Penn State at the moment, but there was still a lack of depth behind her. The team’s best 100 freestyler last season was freshman Kate Sheridan, who swam a 50.32 at the Big Ten Championships and was ranked 33rd overall in the conference.

Penn State began to address that with a big 2020 signing class, including Catherine Stanford, who has been 22.84/49.94 in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles already heading into her senior season, along with a few other nice depth sprint pieces. Fluehr continues that trend into the class of 2021.

Fluehr’s upside is highlighted by the fact that 2019 saw her first-ever USA Swimming long course meets when she raced at the Middle Atlantic Senior Champs.

Fluehr swims for Springfield Township High School and is a recent transfer to Plymouth Whitemarsh Aquatics (PWAC) after previously training with Springfield Aquatics. PWAC counts among its coaches Caroline Boland and Dick Shoulberg, formerly of Germantown Academy. Shoulberg is best-known as the coach of 11 Olympians before retiring from the school under a cloud of controversy in 2015.
