Paltrinieri Hits 7:46.47 800 Free, Quadarella 15:53.29 1500 At Italian Championships

2023 ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The third day of the 2023 Italian Championships saw Olympian Gregorio Paltrinieri back in the water, taking on the men’s 800m free event.

The 28-year-old ace easily topped the podium, producing a winning effort of 7:46.47 to take the race by 3 seconds. Behind him was Matteo Lamberti who also dipped under 7:50 with a silver medal-worthy 7:49.48.

Both men cleared the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 7:53.11 needed to qualify for this summer’s World Championships while Paltrinieri now ranks 2nd in the world in this 8free event.

The men’s 200m IM saw just one competitor dip under the 2:00 barrier in the form of Alberto Razzetti.

The 23-year-old European champion in the 400m IM clocked a time of 1:58.48 in this shorter IM to check in with a time just outside the top 10 performances of his career. Razzetti owns a lifetime best of 1:57.13 from the 2021 Italian Championships, a mark which remains as the national record.

Razzetti earned World Championship qualification with his swim tonight while he also inserts himself into slot #10 in the season’s world rankings.

Simona Quadarella put up a head-turning performance in the women’s 1500m freestyle, posting a winning result of 15:53.29. She hit the only time of the field under 16:14 en route to adding this event to her 800m free victory from night one of the competition, qualifying for Fukuoka in both races.

Quadarella’s effort this evening checks in as the 7th fastest of her career.

The Olympic champion now ranks #2 in the world in this event, sitting only behind American Katie Ledecky.

Daniel Wiffen’s 800 split on Friday was marginally faster. Greg has the third fastest time this year not the second.
