GIRLS 200m FREESTYLE
Harriet Cooper of Great Britain put a shine on the night early with a very solid performance in the 200m freestyle. Going neck-and-neck with RedDeer Catalina’s Rebecca Smith, Cooper came way with a win in 1:56.26.
Smith ended up finishing second overall in 1:57.17, just holding off all advances from British swimmer Georgina Boyle. Boyle, 16, ended up rounding out the top three with a 1:57.78.
BOYS 200m FREESTYLE
Javier Acevedo, now representing the Markham Aquatic Club, battled things out with British swimmer Craig McLean. The two were well ahead of the rest of the pack as they trudged to the wall.
Acevedo managed to come out on top in 1:46.12 while McLean was second in 1:46.97. Samuel Bélanger from Laval managed to hold on for the bronze in 1:48.61.
GIRLS 100m BREASTSTROKE
The storyline of the night for the Canadian athletes was Kelsey Wog’s dominant swim in the 100m breaststroke. With a very solid swim, Wog managed to put up a 1:06.20 to claim gold.
That time broke the previous 15-17 national age group mark of 1:06.29 set by former 50m breaststroke world record holder Amanda Reason.
Nina Kucheran finished second behind Wog in 1:08.87.
BOYS 100m BREASTSTROKE
Michael Andrew claimed his first victory of the competition with a 58.32 performance in the 100m breaststroke. Andrew was out quick and emerged as the leader right from the get-go.
Andrew was the only swimmer who finished under one-minute as Charlie Attwood of Britain touched in for silver in 1:00.69.
The time for Andrew roughly translates to a sub one-minute long course swim which would be a personal best time for him.
GIRLS 400m IM
Tessa Cieplucha from Oakville won the girls 400m IM in 4:36.74, just slightly beating Sarah Darcel of Island Swimming to the wall.
Darcel was second in 4:36.83 followed by Mabel Zavaros, also of Oakville, in 4:40.35.
BOYS 400m IM
The boys 400m IM featured a close battle as well as Montana Champagne and Joseph Hulme brought things down to the wire in one of the most intense races of the night.
Champagne grabbed gold in 4:18.57 and Hulme had to settle for silver with a swift 4:18.68. Din Selmanovic of Etobicoke grabbed bronze in 4:20.75.
GIRLS 100m FLY
Penny Oleksiak maintained her dominance in the butterfly event with a huge Ontario age group record time of 58.20 to claim gold.
Oleksiak won over Laura Stephens who managed to put together a 58.43 performance for second. Tazmin Pugh of Britain finished third in 58.90.
Rebecca Smith won the ‘B’ final in 59.86.
BOYS 100m BUTTERFLY
Michael Andrew added another notch on his belt here in Ontario with a very strong 52.53 swim to win the 100m butterfly. The time was slightly slower than the 51.58 swim he put up in prelims, but still managed to secure his second victory.
Javier Acevedo finished second behind Andrew in 53.68, shaving just a small bit off his prelim swim. Stephen Calkins of UCSC was third.
GIRLS 50m BACKSTROKE
With a new Scottish record Kathleen Dawson churned out a victory in the girls 50m backstroke. Dawson swam a 26.90 in prelims to break the original record, and bettered that with a 26.76 in finals en route to a gold medal.
Dawson was the only one under 27-seconds as second place finisher Emma Ball rocked a 27.00 for the silver medal. Newmarket swimmer Danielle Hanus took home the bronze medal in 27.22 followed by 14-year-old Kayla Sanchez in 27.22.
BOYS 50m BACKSTROKE
With not much rest between the 100m butterfly and the 50m backstroke, Michael Andrew still managed to take home his third victory of the night making him a perfect three for three.
Andrew swam beside Acevedo again, winning the event by the slimmest of margins with a 24.08. Acevedo was just behind him in 24.09.
I guess those are good times for MA? I don’t recall what his previous SCM times were?
I don’t know where and when he swam most of these times and if they are his best times (probably) but his seed times at this meet are:
50 breast. 27.47
100 breast. 59.49
50 back. 24.25
100 back. 53.67
50 fly. 23.31
100 fly. 51.14
50 free. 21.90
100 free. 49.23
200 IM. 1.57.51
So 58.32 in the 100 breast is probably a new PB like 24.01 in the 50 back.
See I think it translates to about where he is in long course now (hear me out). Andrew swam 58.32, which is about 2.36 faster than his long course PB. Now there is no question discrepancy between long and short vary between person to person. I can imagine that the better someones underwaters are, the bigger the gap will be? So someone like Adam Peaty Whose front end speed is formidable, is only 1.2 seconds faster in short course (this might change tonight), while VDB is 2.9 seconds faster, so I suspect most swimmers will sit in this bracket.
