ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Golden Grizzlies kick off Horizon League competition with a splash, showcasing a dominant performance across the board.

In the first day of competition, the Golden Grizzlies saw success in relays, taking first place in both men’s and women’s 200 yard medley relay.

Karel Subagyo got started early, taking first place in the men’s 1650 yard with a scorching time of 15:33.63. The men’s 200 yard freestyle saw the Golden Grizzlies sweep the podium, with Jonas Cantrell, Joey Countryman, and Hill Harchelroad, respectively. Grace Albrecht secured first place in the women’s 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.82 and Harry Nicholson also secured first in the men’s 100 yard backstroke. Jack Wike was right behind him securing second in the event with a time of 51.41.

Christopher Palvadre earned first place in the men’s 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 56.05. The women’s and men’s 200 butterfly also saw a Golden Grizzlies sweep on the podium. For the women, Jordyn ShippsRhianna Hensler, and Ajete Eggers secured the top spots. For the men, Auben NugentKieron Bezuidenhout, and Archer Jankoviak, left no room for the Penguins. In the women’s 50 yard freestyle, Sam Theissen earned first place with a time of 24.60 and Ronja Riihinen was close behind with a time of 24.66. Micah Scheffer secured the top spot in the men’s 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.75.

In the men’s 200 yard backstroke, the Golden Grizzlies swept the podium once again with Harry Nicholson (1:48.97), Max Haney (1:52.18), and Dane Charleston (1:53.55). In the women’s 100 yard butterfly, the Golden Grizzlies did it once again with Jordyn Shipps (56.33), Sam Theissen (59.26) and Ava McNamara (1:00.00). The men’s and women’s 200 yard individual medley showcased a number of top finishes. Grace Albrecht finished first (2:09.08) and Katherine Teng was shortly behind finishing second (2:14.36). On the men’s side, the Golden Grizzlies swept again with Jack Wike (1:50.64), Harry Nicholson (1:52.43), and Max Haney (1:55.96).

For the Oakland Dive team, Lyde DeHooghe took the stop spot in the men’s 1-meter with a score of 262.73. On the women’s side, Ellie Chalifoux secured first, scoring 290.33, and Victoria Sanders earned a third place finish with a score of 266.03.

Saturday was no different for the Golden Grizzlies. With first and second place finishes in both the women’s and men’s 400 yard medley relay, the Golden Grizzlies did not miss a beat. The Golden Grizzlies took one, two in both the women’s and men’s 400 yard individual medley with Jordyn Shipps (4:23.44) and Kelley Hassett (4:27.39), then Karel Subagyo (4:09.90) and Carson Ricker (4:01.63). In the men’s 200 yard freestyle, Harry Nicholson took first (1:39.20) and Aidan Boldt took third (1:43.52). For the women’s 200 yard freestyle, Erika Pietras took first with a time of 1:51.64. The women’s 50 backstroke saw Katherine Teng (26.32) secure first and Alyssia Betancourt in second place (27.39).

In the women’s 50 yard backstroke, Isabella Gary earned second place (30.30) and Kalin Wiltrout secured third place (30.50) for her first top-three finish as a Golden Grizzly. In the men’s 50 yard backstroke, Alex Larkin secured second with a time of 25.45 and Carson Ricker earned third (26.28). In the women’s 50 yard freestyle Ronja Riihinen collected a first place finish with a time of 24.01.On the men’s side, Charlie Brown took the top spot in the men’s 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.21. Jonas Cantrell put up an impressive time of 4:30.21 in the men’s 500 yard freestyle to earn first place. Colin Martin (22.22) edged out Micah Scheffer (22.28) in the men’s 50 yard butterfly to secure the top spot. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Oakland took the top 3 spots for the women. The men secured first and third in the event.

The Oakland Dive team continued their success from yesterday with Ellie Chalifoux garnering the top spot in the 3-meter with a score of 323.63 and Victoria Sanders in second place with 290.40.

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were back in action for their second meet of the 2024-25 season as they traveled to Rochester, Michigan to take on Horizon League opponent Oakland in a dual.

Miriam Frass got the first win of the meet for the Penguins, as she took home the victory in the women’s 1650 free with a time of 16:53.92, more than 17 seconds faster than her teammate Olivia Sweetman, who finished in second place. The Penguins finished with the four fastest times in the event. Frass also captured victories in the 100 free (51.60), 200 free (1:51.35), and 500 free (4:57.66).

It was another very good meet in the pool for reigning Horizon League Women’s Swimmer of the Week Oliwia Kaniak, who took home three victories for the Penguin women. She took home victory in the 50 breaststroke (29.08), 200 breaststroke (2:22.98), and the 100 breaststroke as she swam a time of 1:06.33. The Penguins swam the three fastest times in the event, with Eloise Fisher finishing second with a time of 1:08.05, and Chiara Vetter rounding out the top three with a time of 1:08.44.

Olivia Sweetman finished in first place in the 500 free with a time of 5:08.17.

The Penguin women also got good races from Izzy Rossi and Anna Kozinska in the 100 backstroke, who finished second and third, respectively. In the 50 free, Madelyn Mahoney and Oliwia Kaniak finished third and fourth with heir times being separated by less than two-tenths of a second. Reigning Horizon League Women’s Diver of the Week Hanna Held scored 266.03 in the 1m dive, good enough for a runner-up finish. Other runners-up during the women were Kozinska in the 100 and 200 backstroke, Frass in the 200 IM, Allison Ramirez Romero in the 100 butterfly, Kaniak in the 100 IM.

The women fell by an overall team score of 365-197.

Reigning Horizon League Men’s Diver of the Week Brooks Adams took home his first victory of the season in the three-meter dive, as he totaled a score of 231.90. His teammates Jake Scalise (222.98), and Andrew Miller (210.30) rounded out the top three, as they were the only three divers competing in the event.

Jacob Gramer took home two victories on the day for the Penguin men, winning the 100 free with a time of 46.14, and also capturing a victory in the 100 butterfly as he swam a time of 49.39. His time was one second quicker than Lorenz Beck, who finished second as YSU captured the top two spots in the event.

James Slessor also won two events for the Penguins. Both of his victories came in breaststroke events, as he took home first in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 25.15, and the 100 breaststroke where he clocked a time of 54.43.

The men won two other events during the meet, as Elliot Elmore won the 50 backstroke with a time of 23.33, just six one-hundredths of a second than the second-place finisher for the Golden Grizzlies. The 400 free relay team of Rares DrugaJacob GramerGavin Redden, and Darren Laing also picked up a victory, as their collective time of 3:03.64 was just under two-tenths of a second quicker than the second-place time.

The Penguin men also collected second place finishes from Poyraz San Askin in the 500 and 1650 free, James Slessor in the 100 and 200 breaststroke as well as the 100 IM, Gavin Redden in the 50 free, Brooks Adams in the 1m dive, Dominic Bono in the 400 IM, Ethan Woycehoski in the 200 free, and finally the 200 free relay team of Druga, Redden, Laing, and Gramer.
