GENEVA, Ohio – In a two-day event, the Golden Grizzlies competed against a trio of A-10 conference opponents Duquesne, George Mason, and St. Bonaventure.
“The 3 session format over a 24 hour period was definitely a challenge. I would’ve liked to have swum a bit faster all the way around but considering our workload the past week I like where we are and I really liked the way the teams raced,” Head Coach Pete Hovland said.
Oakland had many top-five finishes over the three sessions. The women’s 200 free relay team made up of Mia Keranen, Jordyn Shipps, Sydney McDowell, and Ronja Riihinen finished first with a time of 1:36.52. The men’s team of Ryan Geheb, Christian Bart, Valance Washington, and Mack Flowers also won this event (1:23.44).
The women’s 400 medley relay team of Susan LaGrand, Taylor Bailey, Shipps, and Keranen finished first in an impressive 3:48.24. Marko Khotynetskyi, Gehab, Flowers, Rudy Aguilar won for the men in 3:23.06. In the women’s 200 medley relay, Oakland women finished first and second, while the men took first place.
Aguilar swam to first place in the 500 free with a time of 4:36.19, followed by Khotynetskyi in second (4:37.39), and Jonas Cantrell in third (4:38.26). Flowers won the 100 butterfly (49.15), followed by Danylo Hrebelnyi in second (50.49) and Sebastian Aguirre in third (50.71).
LaGrand had an impressive weekend and won the 100 backstroke (55.61), 200 backstroke (2:01.28), and the 200 IM (2:03.58).
Andrew Bernsdorf won the 200 IM (1:53.97) followed by Hrebelnyi in second (1:55.63). Bernsdorf also won the 400 IM (4:06.46) while Christian Bart took first in the 100 free (45.48) and the 50 free (20.67).
In the 1650 freestyle, Emily Aycock swam to a second-place finish of 17:36.04 while Ben Davis finished second for the men (16:38.74), followed by Philip DeJonge in third (16:49.9).
Ellie Chalifoux won the 1-meter dive with a final score of 280.9 and finished second in the 3-meter dive (267.05). Scott Scrivano finished second in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive with 286.05 and 276.2, respectively.
Oakland continues their season at GVSU on Nov. 5.

GENEVA, Ohio – The Duquesne swimming and diving team topped George Mason and St. Bonaventure in the Atlantic 10 Classic at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday and Sunday. The Dukes bested the Patriots 222-128 and the Bonnies 270.5-79.5 while Oakland posted a 193-159 victory over Duquesne across the two-day event.
Mendy De Rooi led the Dukes with three first-place finishes on the weekend, pacing the 50 free (23.71), 100 free (51.37) and 100 fly (55.28) for Duquesne.
Orla Egan finished first in the 500 free at 5:01.55 for the Dukes.
Sidney O’Donnell continued her strong season for the Duquesne divers, pacing all competitors on the three-meter boards with a score of 271.80 to go with a second-place mark in the one-meter at 258.90. Adrienne White placed third in the one-meter dive at 224.40 in addition to a fourth-place mark of 229.65 on the three-meter boards.
De Rooi, Sydney Sherman, Leah Reisker and Hayley Taylor topped all relay teams from George Mason and St. Bonaventure in the 200 free relay at 1:36.53 with a second-place finish.
Emma Menzer defeated the Patriots and Bonnies in the 200 IM (2:05.22) to go with a win in the 400 IM (4:30.54) against Oakland and St. Bonaventure. Haley Scholer would just behind Menzer in the 400 IM (4:31.49) for the Dukes. Scholer also bested opponents from the Patriots and Bonnies in the 100 back (56.56) followed by Taylor and Reagan Linkous (57.39).
Sherman added a win over Oakland and St. Bonaventure in the 50 free (24.23) while Audrey Steen recorded wins over George Mason and the Golden Grizzlies in the 200 fly (2:07.89).
Head coach David Sheets: “The team put in another strong performance this weekend. It was great we were able to compete against GMU and SBU as well as a very strong Oakland team. The format of this meet is such where the ladies must race a multitude of events over a short two day period. In swimming times are usually the standard by how we are judged but for us, this early in the year we want to focus on the process of the races and not be concerned so much about the time showing up on the board. If we continue to work those aspects of our training and races the pieces will always fall into place for us.”
Head diving coach Jeanine Stright: “The divers continue to show consistency during competitions. They competed one-meter in the morning, where Sidney O’Donnell took second and Adrienne White placed third, and at night on three-meter, Sidney O’Donnell won the event and Adrienne placed fourth. The freshman continue to improve their lists as well. Overall, I am happy with their performances.”

The Dukes are slated to travel to Cleveland, Ohio for the Magnus Cup on Nov. 18-20.

GENEVA, Ohio – Senior Rachel Kimmel and freshman Silvana Cabrera registered winning efforts to show the way for the St. Bonaventure women’s swimming and diving team at the Atlantic 10 Classic held at SPIRE Institute Saturday and Sunday.
Kimmel took multiple victories in yet another meet, continuing her outstanding start to the season.
Already an Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week this fall, Kimmel placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.74. She also won the 200-yard breaststroke by touching the wall in a time of 2:18.41.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Cabrera captured a victory with a time of 2:07.22.
Cabrera would also place fourth with a time of 58.32 in the 100-yard butterfly.
St. Bonaventure would receive a trio of fifth-place finishes from seniors Zanre Oberholzer and Claire Schaef and freshman Halle Myers.
Myers finished fifth in 50-yard freestyle (24.52), while Oberholzer placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (58.15).
Schaef would place fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:20.09.
The Bonnies are back in the pool on Saturday, Nov. 6 when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell. That meet is slated to start at 5:00 p.m.

GENEVA, Ohio – Freshman diver Zyad Morsy’s record-setting performance highlighted the weekend for the St. Bonaventure men’s swimming and diving team at the Atlantic 10 Classic held Saturday and Sunday at SPIRE Institute.
Morsy broke the school record in the 1-meter dive with a score of 335.60. He shattered the previous record of 332.25 which had been held since 2012 by Mike Murphy.
The Cairo, Egypt native was victorious in both the 1-meter dive and 3-meter dive, winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 315.25.
In the 1-meter dive freshman Davis Hutchinson captured a third-place finish for the Bonnies with a score of 273.95, while sophomore Lucas Dekaney placed fourth with a score of 271.20.
Sophomore Maxwell Murray picked up his first collegiate event victory with a time of 16:30.82 in the 1650-yard freestyle. Freshman Knute Wargin finished third in the even with a time of 16:52.89.
Graduate student Maciej Danilewski captured a pair of third-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (50.90) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.65).
Senior Alec Thomas finished third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.30, while Kyle Gluck finished fourth in this event touching the wall in a time of 21.32.
Thomas would finish in fourth place with a time of 1:43.20 in the 200-yard freestyle.
In the 200-yard butterfly freshman Alexander Behr placed third with a time of 1:54.22.
St. Bonaventure’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Gluck, Thomas, Danilewski and senior William Lowe placed second, finishing with a time 1:24.62.
In the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:28.86, the Bonnies would finish third with the team of Danilewski, Behr, Thomas, and sophomore Teddy Murphey.
The Bonnies will return to action next weekend when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday, Nov. 6 to take on Cornell. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.

GENEVA, Ohio – The George Mason women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams concluded the two-day A-10 Classic on Sunday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The Mason women’s team defeated St. Bonaventure (207-137), but fell to Duquesne (222-128) and Oakland (242-108). The Patriots men’s team recorded a victory over St. Bonaventure (202-151) and dropped its dual against Oakland (251-102).
On the women’s side, freshman Ali Tyler won the the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.16), with classmate Kylie Thompson ninth in the event (2:01.05). Tyler also finished first in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:30.27), with classmate Sydney Branch seventh (18:38.99).
Tyler posted a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.72), while freshman Shannon Judge was seventh (24.56).
Freshman Anna Whelan took the top spot in the 400-yard IM (4:27.14) with freshman Michaela Teachey seventh (4:40.44) and senior Mia McKinley eighth (4:41.63).
In the 200-yard backstroke, Whelan placed second (2:03.49) and junior Megan Mastropaolo finished 11th (2:12.34). In the 100-yard backstoke, Judge was seventh (58.72) and senior Hannah Milikich placed 10th (59.93).
Sophomore Abigail Murtaugh took third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.42), while senior Laura Hodge was eighth (2:11.62) and Teachey 10th (2:12.14). Hodge finished 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (59.39).
In the 100-yard freestyle, freshman Emma DeJong registered a third-place finish (52.72), with Judge ninth in the event (53.92).
Senior Jacquee Clabeaux placed fourth the 200-yard IM (2:06.48), 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.82) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.68).
In the 500-yard freestyle, Hodge placed seventh (5:19.41), Branch eighth (5:19.85) and Murtaugh ninth (5:21.00).
The team of Clabeaux, DeJong, Judge and Tyler placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:28.93), the group of Clabeaux, DeJong, Murtaugh and Tyler took second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:51.96) and the combination of junior Emily Lewantowicz, DeJong, Judge and Whelan finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.82).
On the men’s side, junior Thomas Chapman won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.48), while freshman Justin Lee was third (2:09.79) and junior Sammy Lucht fourth (2:11.14).
Lucht touched the wall second in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.68), with Lee fourth (59.22).
In the 200-yard IM, Chapman took second (1:55.88), with sophomore Anthony Nguyen fourth (1:56.14) and Lucht sixth (1:57.85).
Anthony Nguyen placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (46.25) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.02). Freshman Zane Roberts was sixth in the both the 100-yard freestyle (47.29) and 200-yard freestyle (1:44.98).
In the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Alexander Franklin placed second (50.49), with sophomore Dylan Nguyen fourth (52.91) and freshman Joe Durocher fifth (53.67). Franklin also placed second (1:52.91) in the 200-yard backstroke, with Dylan Nguyen fifth (1:57.63).
In the 400-yard IM, Chapman touched the wall second (4:07.67), freshman Nicholas Maranto fourth (4:14.59) and senior Timothy McKinley sixth (4:18.39).
Senior Jared Bergan placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.90) and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (50.80).
Sophomore Graham Boyle placed fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:59.87), with McKinley eighth (17:16.07). Boyle was seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.47), with Maranto ninth (4:57.20) and McKinley 10th (4:57.56).
The team of sophomore Sorab Aman, Anthony Nguyen, Franklin and Lucht placed second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:26.03), the group of Aman, Franklin, Lucht and Roberts took second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:32.61) and the combination of senior Will Rastatter, Anthony Nguyen, Franklin and Roberts finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:06.06).
The Patriots are back in action Nov. 18-20, hosting the Patriot Invitational at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va.
