Day 1 Recap
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland Men’s and Women’s Swim and Dive team completed the first day of competition back home in the Oakland Aquatic Center resulting in a number of remarkable victorious finishes for the night until they return back to the pool tomorrow morning at 10:00 am.
Kicking it off for the night was the women’s 200 medley A relay team consisting of Susan LaGrand, Taylor Bailey, Sophia Davis, and Ronja Riihinen making a first-place finish with a time of (1:43.85). On the flip side, the men’s C relay team with Luis Fernando Oliveira, Kieron Bezuidenhout, Dane Herrick, and Valance Washington jumped in to complete the 200 medley relay, (in heat one), with a first-place finishing time of (1.34.67). Heat two consisted of Oakland’s A team stringed together by swimmers Marko Khotynetskyi, Christian Bart, Sofus Balladone, and Sam McKenzie who touched in at a time of (1.29.04) to secure another early first-place finish for the Golden Grizzlies.
The 1000-yard freestyle was claimed by Oakland’s Jonas Cantrell as he swam in at a speedy time of (9:31.55), and notably, Angelina Baker took third with a time of (10:33.67). Cantrell later dominated the 500-yard freestyle coming in ahead of his competition with an impressive time of (4:36.40).
Speeding things back up in the pool, Oakland took the title for the 100-yard backstroke across the board with LaGrand roping in the win for the women with a time of (55.04) and Khotynetskyi taking the win for the men with a time of (48.41). Not only this, but the two would then continue on bring in two more first-place wins, individually, in the men’s and women’s 200-yard backstroke events with times of (2:01.44, LaGrand) and (1:48.82, Khotynetskyi). Additionally, LaGrand stacked another first place win with her time in the 200-yard IM (2:04.63).
The 50-yard freestyle titles were swiped by Golden Grizzlies Jordyn Shipps as she swam in at a time of (23.92) for first place, and Bart grabbed the first place slot for the men punching in a final time of (20.45) in the water. Extending to the 100-yard freestyle, Oakland upheld their winning position as McKenzie claimed his first place time of (44.90), and for the women, Shipps tallied her second freestyle win with a final time of (51.95). Shipps also took home the gold in the 100-yard butterfly with a final time of (55.51).
Notably, graduate student Taylor Bailey earned her first-place title in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke with a final time of (2:18.11), with Oakland’s Bella Gary right behind her in second place at (2:23.06).
The diving team wrapped up day one with victories from Victoria Sanders in the women’s one-meter diving contest with a final score of (257.20), and Ellie Chalifoux with a final score of (253.15) taking the first two slots on the leaderboard for the weekend.
Oakland wrapped up night one with the 400-yard medley relay competition and they took both titles under their wings with first-place finishes from both the men’s and women’s A relay teams (3:30.24, women), and (3:02.21, men).
The Golden Grizzlies return back to the pool tomorrow morning at 10:00 am to complete the remainder of the competition.
Day 2 Recap
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland swim and dive teams finished off the weekend of competition with Horizon League competitors IUPUI and Youngstown State resulting in Golden Grizzly sweep across the board with first place titles handed to Oakland.

The women kicked it off with a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay behind the speed of the A relay team consisting of Susan LaGrand, Sohvi Nenonen, Mia Keranen, and Jordyn Shipps with a time of (3:42.87). The men followed after with heat one of the C relay team with Sebastian Aquirre, Andrew Bernsdorf, Dane Herrick, and Charlie Brown and touched first with a time of (3:17.50), and to couple this the second heat was claimed by Oakland’s A relay team consisting of Marko Khotynetskyi, Christian Bart, Sofus Balladone, and Sam McKenzie with a remarkable new record time of (3:11.32).
Following with the 1650 freestyle, Oakland’s Aidan Boldt swam into the first place spot as he knocked down a time of (16:29.62), and Mia Englender touched first for the women and fourth overall with a time (17:28.24). In heat two of the mile, Angelina Baker earned her second-place win for the women with a time of (17:12.26), and Bora Kutlu recorded a time of (16:17.83) for the men, respectively.
Kiera Brough delivered in the first heat of the 200-yard freestyle with a final time of (1:54.72), and finishing off the second heat, LaGrand took the first-place title with a swift time of (1:48.65). On the flip side, Bernsdorf roped in a third-place finish as he finished with a time of (1:42.40)
Cantrell Jonas and Harry Nicholson delivered side-by-side wins as they swept the men’s 200-yard freestyle with a first-place time from Cantrell (1:39.75) and a speedy second place finish from Nicholson (1:39.82).
Alyssia Betancourt took away the women’s 50-yard backstroke with the title time of (26.59), and Khotynetskyi claimed it for the men with a time of (22.05) with Balladone right beside him at (23.09). Betancourt would then later take the winning finish for the 100-yard backstroke with a time of (57.86). Similarly, Khotynetskyi stacked another first place win in the 100-yard backstroke for the men claiming a time of (47.55).
Taylor Bailey made her mark in the lane as she dominated the women’s 50-yard breaststroke with a time of (29.26), and Bart swam in at a time of (24.71) just short of the first-place finish behind IUPUI’s Logan Kelly (24.66). Bart later finished the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of (54.12) for another second place finish.
Mia Keranen outswam her competition in the lane with a first-place finish in the women’s 100-yard butterfly with a time of (56.02), and James Hart made a notable second-place finish for the men with a final time of (50.94) in heat one, and McKenzie came in at heat two with a second-place time (49.32).
Shipps came back to take the 50-yard freestyle title for the women with a final time of (23.33), and Herrick made an energetic finish for the men as he knocked down a first-place time of (20.76) in heat one, and Micah Scheffer took the second-place slot in heat two of the 50-yard freestyle swimming in at a time of (20.30).
Riihinen secured second-place for the women’s 100-yard freestyle with a final time of (51.39), and Scheffer and Cantrell made impressive strides in the pool to claim second and third place finishes for the men (45.45, Scheffer) and (45.64, Cantrell).
LaGrand made an incredible first place for the women’s 100-yard breaststroke with a time of (1:02.45), with Golden Grizzlies Nenonen, Gary, and Lewis occupying the top four spotos on the leaderboard for the event.
In the two heats of the women’s 500 free, Baker made the first place finish with a time of (5:00.85), and Davis make an exciting finish in a tight race to take home the first place title with a time of (4:36.32).
Sam Thiessen tallied the second place finish with a time of (26.70) in the first heat of the women’s 50-yard freestyle, and Shipps came in at the second heat to take the title with a time of (24.78). On the men’s side, Brown earned the first place win with his fast time of (22.26), and in the second heat McKenzie finished at a time of (22.35).
Bailey and LaGrand both took the first place slots in the two heats of the womens 100-IM with times of (57.70 ,Bailey) and (55.57, LaGrand). And Oakland’s Bernsdorf and Mackenzie delivered two more speedy victories in the lanes with a final times of (52.47, Bernsdorf) and (49.70, McKenzie) for the mens 100-IM.
To cap off the weekend, the Golden Grizzlies finished with the 200-yard freestyle, accumulating two more wins with both women’s A relay team (1:34.48) and men’s A relay team (1:21.00)
Ellie Chalifoux stayed on top for the diving team accumulating a final score tally of 306.35 for the weekend. Notably, Victoria Sanders recorded a final score of 230.05 putting her in fourth place for the meet.
The Golden Grizzlies will return back to the water for another home meet on Friday, January 20th, against Bowling Green.

Rochester, Mich. – Gavin Webb and Aleksa Radenovic earned event victories in the Youngstown State men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs’ losses to Horizon League foes, Oakland and IUPUI. The meet concluded on Saturday at the Oakland Aquatic Center.
The men lost to Oakland, the 2022 Horizon League Champions, 399 to 163, while the women lost 438 to 123. IUPUI defeated the YSU men 376 to 185, while the women lost 361.5 to 198.5.
Webb, the reigning men’s 1650 free Horizon League Champion, finished first in the event, beating the competition by over 30 seconds with a time of 15:34.00. He also placed second in the 500 and 1000 free with times of 4:36.43 and 9:31.81, respectively.
Radenovic earned victories in both the 100 and 200 fly. He clocked a 47.98 in the 100 fly and a 1:49.28 in the 200 fly. He bested the competition by over a second in both events. He also earned two runner-up finishes in the 200 IM and 50 fly. His time of 21.73 in the 50 fly surpassed his previous school record of 21.75. He clocked a 1:53.02 in the 200 IM in his second-place performance. He also finished third in the 200 back with a time of 1:51.87 to round out his incredible performance against many of the top athletes in the Horizon League.
Freshman James Slessor delivered impressive performances in the breaststroke events. He finished third in both the 50 and 100 breast. His time of 25.63 in the 50 breast bested the school record he set last weekend by over a second. He clocked a 55.71 in the 100 breast to finish top three.
Freshman Zachary Lao was YSU’s top finisher in both the men’s one-meter and three-meter dives, finishing fifth in both events. He scored a 249.75 in the three-meter and a 242.85 in the one-meter.
Many Penguins finished top five at the meet. Crispy Barton finished fourth in the 1650 free, clocking a 16.17.54. Soma Albert picked up a fifth-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 52.33. Wilson Cannon finished fifth in the 100 fly, swimming a 50.95.
Rares Druga was fifth in the 50 free with a time of 20.83. Karan Raju also picked up a fifth-place finish, clocking a 1:54.84 in the 200 fly. Gavin Redden finished fifth in the 100 free with a time of 46.23. In the 200 free, Christian Taylor finished fifth, clocking a 1:46.17.
Freshman Miriam Frass led the women’s squad with two runner-up finishes in the 500 and 1000 free with time of 5:08.14 and 10:28.15, respectively. She also finished third in the 1650 free, clocking a 17:25.62. Frass was also fifth in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.68.
Diver Kayla Wrasman finished an impressive second in the three-meter dive with a score of 235.70. She was also fourth in the one-meter dive, scoring a 246.80.
Freshman Anna Kozinska finished top three in both the 100 and 200 back. She clocked a 58.06 in the 100 back and a 2:09.75 in the 200 back to place third.
Oliwia Kaniak picked up a fourth-place finish in the 50 breast, swimming a 30.46. Freshman Allison Ramirez-Romero was fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 58.79.
Isabelle Hanson finished fifth in both the 50 and 100 back with times of 27.49 and 59.28, respectively.
Hailey Clark finished top five in the 1000 free, clocking a 10:49.96 to finish fifth.
Gunnhildur Baldursdottir clocked a 2:14.56 in the 200 fly to finish fifth. Freshman Madalyn Mahoney also picked-up a fifth-place finish with a time of 53.81 in the 100 free. Hannah Ogler clocked a 24.85 to place fifth in the 50 free.
Gwyneth Thomas and Jordan Truelsch also earned fifth-place finishes. Thomas clocked a 1:06.80 in the 100 breast to finish fifth, while Truelsch placed fifth in the 200 back with a time of 2:12.80.
The Penguins are next in action when the diving squad hosts Clarion in the Beeghly Natatorium on Saturday, Jan. 21.
The swimmers and divers will return to action together the following weekend when they take on Denison on Jan. 28 in Granville, OH and then compete at the Butler Invite in Fishers, Ind. on Jan. 29.
