DENTON – The UNT swimming and diving team notched a big victory over conference foe Rice on Friday night, rolling to a 131-112 victory over the Owls, as several Mean Green swimmers won their events and a pair of divers set new school records.
Junior Kamryn Wong and sophomore Sydney Guidara each set new program records on the boards, with Wong breaking her own record she set earlier in the fall on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 328.58. Guidara shattered the 3-meter springboard record with a score of 350.78, as the duo secured 18 points for the Mean Green by winning both diving events.
In the pool, several athletes brought home victories, including a pair who scored two wins apiece in their individual events.
Indra Vandenbussche, who transferred this year from SMU, doubled up in the 100 and 200 freestyle events to score 18 points, while Diana Kolb doubled up in the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM. Shaena McCloud earned a win in the 50 freestyle, Samantha Robles won the 100 butterfly and freshman Mikaela Goelst took first in the 100 breaststroke.
The Mean Green also claimed first in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of Robles, Scarlett McCloud , Vandenbussche and Shaena McCloud claimed 11 points for the team with a resounding win by more than two seconds in 1:34.66.
“I’m really pleased with the team effort and team environment at our first home meet of the season,” UNT head coach Brittany Roth said. “I know our athletes are excited to compete in their home pool, and they had a great showing, embracing the opportunity to compete with a really strong program within our conference in Rice. I’m glad we got this win for our seniors, and I’m excited to see this team continue to take on these challenges and step up to them. I’m looking forward to see what they can do next.”
Aside from Guidara’s and Wong’s wins in the diving well, Guidara took second in the 1-meter event and Wong got second in the 3-meter. Freshman Amelia Sharp and senior Mackenzie Ferguson also scored points with fourth-place finishes in the 3- and 1-meter events, respectively. Guidara and Ferguson each got NCAA Zone cuts in the 1-meter, meaning Guidara has now achieved her Zone cut in both springboard events and Ferguson earned the first Zone cut of her career.
“Everyone had either personal bests or season bests on both boards,” associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O’Callaghan said. “We had seven personal bests and one season best on 1-meter and four personal bests and four season bests on 3-meter. I’m so proud of them. They’ve put in the work the last month of training since our last meet. They’ve worked hard, they’ve supported each other and encouraged each other, and the effort they’ve been putting in showed today 10 times over. This group has so much potential, I’m excited to see where the rest of the season takes us.”
