The 2022 Swiss Short Course Championships begin tomorrow, Thursday, November 18th, with some of the nation’s top talent set to descend upon the city of Sion.
Among the competitors is Olympic bronze medalist Noe Ponti.
Ponti is coming off of the FINA World cup stop in Berlin, where the 21-year-old snagged 100m fly silver behind winner South African Chad Le Clos. Ponti put up a time of 49.38, the fastest short course outing of his career. That checked in as a new Swiss record to boot.
Ponti also collected silver behind Le Clos in the 200m fly, hitting a mark of 1:50.43 for his 2nd fastest performance ever.
20-year-old Antonio Djakovic is also set to race at these Short Course Championships, with the national record holder entered in the 200m free, 400m free and 200m fly.
Roman Mityukov, Nils Liess and Bulgarian Josif Miladinov are additional notable entrants for the men.
On the women’s side, breaststroking ace Lisa Mamie is expected to take on the 50m, 100m, and 200m distances of the discipline, while Nina Kost has a big schedule on her plate. Kost is entered in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle races, in addition to the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events.
The meet actually only begins on Friday. Antonio is among the group of National Team athletes that just started their mandatory military service with the high performance sports division and is a little more looking towards Melbourne than the meet in Sion.
Thanks coach Nico for the news about Djakovic. Unrelated, but in Canada another big meet with a ton of PBs and 2 more SCM NAGs (8.06.05 in the 800 free and 4.21.08 in the 400 IM) for 14 year-old Laon Kim
