We just finished up with the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, with Paris, France set to host the next edition in 2024 and Los Angeles primed for 2028.
Looking at several Games down the road, Russia may be among those vying to bid on the 2036 event, according to the nation’s president Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at an economic forum this week, Putin stated, “Regrettably, there have been ever fewer contenders in the world for hosting the Olympics. We have long supported the [Olympic movement], and I hope that the principles of Olympism will not be distorted and that politics won’t be involved.
“If it happens the way I am describing now, we are not excluding the possibility of Russia hosting the Olympic Games.”
Also according to state-run Tass, Mayor Konstantin Shestakov of Vladivostok said that the city was indeed planning on submitting a bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games.
This is after a Russian diplomat stated that St. Petersburg and Kazan have already submitted their bids to host the 2036 Olympic Games. (TASS)
Russia hosted the 1980 edition of the Summer Olympics in Moscow, an event in which the United States was among the nations boycotted due to the political situation at the time.
Recently, the 2020 Olympic swimming team stated its pre-Olympic camp in Vladivostok before departing for Tokyo, while the nation did the same before the 2019 FINA World Championships.
Why would the Olympics be held in such a racist country though?
Yeah racism doesn’t exist anywhere else /s
Are they going to compete as “Russia” or as “Russian Olympic Committee” again? I’m gonna miss the Tchaikovsky anthem
It would be awesome to hear the Tetris theme song just once
And we are going to trust RUSADA with the drug testing agin- like in Sochi?
They have the holes in the walls at the lab pre drilled.
I, personally, am not a huge fan of Kazan. It’s a rather quiet city.
St. Petersburg could be a great option though – very lively city that already has solid infrastructure. There would be a lot to do there aside from just watching the Olympics – the Hermitage, Palace Square, Peterhof Palace, etc. Plus, it’s very accessible from the rest of Europe via plane.
What’s wrong with a quiet city? Would it be better to have the Olympics in Rio again?
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a quiet city, but from a tourist/fan perspective, I think it makes a lot more sense to host the Olympics in a more major global city. As well, hosting in a major city means possibly less infrastructure to build and more potential re-purposing post-Olympics. It also brings more tourism during the games and after.
You’re right about Rio, that was a complete mess, but nearly every other Summer Olympics has been hosted in a major global city without nearly as many problems.
Although, I suppose many of the most successful Winter Olympics were hosted in smaller cities (e.g. Salt Lake City 2002, Nagano 1998), but the amount of infrastructure required for the… Read more »

There is timely pressure to move resources & admin & political focus away from SP & Moscow to the South & East & this includes a new capital . So logically St P is out .
Both Kazan & Vladivostok are both on the nexus of global focus . The world will be moving on to increased Muslim influence & rising Sufi awareness & Asia – Pacific zone . Kazan is a beautiful Islamic heritage city & Vladivostok is almost a new frontier with plenty of space & sea access. .
Either one but Kremlin will decide which has less room for CIA & their tricks. I think Vladivostok&

Paradoxically, Kazan is the Russian city with permission of Moscow that has more experience in sporting events. In 2013 it successfully organized the Summer Universiade, an event for which it built 36 sports venues and the opening ceremony was an absolute luxury. In this order of ideas, I believe that the Russian city that has the best chance of being chosen to host the 2036 Olympic Games is Kazan. Besides, with the debacle that the IOC is going through and the indifference that many cities are showing to the Olympic movement, the best alternative they have is to choose a city in a country that is not going to shake its budget when it comes to launching a bombastic Olympic… Read more »
I think the calculations in countries like Russia are different. Kazan is not small – 1.3 million people, similar to Belgrade or Prague – and an authoritarian government like that of Russia can force the city to adapt to hosting an event like this.
No country that is hosting the Olympics will be “quiet” during that period of the Olympics. The party follows the Games.
I agree, and we already have a precedent with the election of Brisbane as host of the 2032 Olympic Games, which in terms of population and land area can be defined as a medium and quiet city. However, the IOC did not tremble at the time of awarding the games, after all, what they are looking for is economic and organizational stability so that the expensive Olympic party has continuity and leaves revenue to their pockets. And that Australia is a country with a democratic government and Brisbane does not have the organizational experience in sporting events that Kazan has. (Although they are backed by the successful organization of Sydney 2000).
If Russia makes Kazan’s bid official, let there… Read more »
