MP Swim Tips by Bob Bowman – Episode Two
Bob Bowman, head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils Swimming and Diving Team, explains the backstroke drill Back Touch and Pull. Demonstrated by the greatest athlete of all-time, Michael Phelps, this drill helps swimmers focus on “the catch” in backstroke.
Back Touch and Pull Backstroke
Bob does this drill a little differently. His swimmers keep both hands at their sides while kicking on their backs. They take a full stroke with one arm and return the hand back to their side before they take the next full stroke with the other arm.
What Bob Likes About Back Touch and Pull
It emphasizes what your hips and body should be doing during the stroke cycle. Also, it allows the swimmer to feel “the catch” and feel what their body should be doing the moment of the catch.
