Mona McSharry Hits 1:06.04 100 Breast National Record At Irish Open

2023 IRISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

While competing on day two of the 2023 Irish Open Championships, Mona McSharry fired off a new national record in the women’s 100m breaststroke.

The 22-year-old Olympian topped the podium in Dublin with a time of 1:06.04, beating the field by well over 2 seconds en route to gold. Her result overtook her own previous Irish standard of 1:06.21 she put on the books at the 2021 Irish National Team Trials.

McSharry opened in 31.78 and closed in 34.26 to produce her new 1:06.04 record, inching closer to the 1:06 barrier. Her time would have captured 4th place at last year’s World Championships and would have secured silver at last year’s European Championships.

McSharry now ranks as the 2nd fastest swimmer in the world this season, sitting only behind Dutch national record holder Tes Schouten who clocked the only sub-1:06 thus far in 1:05.92 in France last month.

34.26 second 50 is no joke. Will be interesting to see if she can control her first 50 as successfully, at a race with others splitting much faster than 31.7.

First and second 50s only 2.48 seconds apart. That’s the closest I think I’ve ever seen in an elite 100 breaststroke long course.
