MIT hires Karin Brown as Associate Head Coach for Swimming & Diving

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Karin Brown has been named the associate head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs at MIT announced Julie Soriero, MIT’s Director of Athletics and Department Head. Brown brings almost a decade of coaching experience to the Engineers’ programs. In addition to her coaching duties Brown will also be working as a part of the Engineers’ Communications, Promotions and Marketing staff.

“We are thrilled to have Karin join our coaching staff and the MIT swimming and diving family,” remarked Dawn Dill, the Mary Francis Wagley, ’47 Head Coach of swimming and diving at MIT. “She brings a wealth of experience in working with highly motivated student-athletes and she is committed to providing an outstanding experience for her students, both in and out of the pool. While at Amherst, Karin had the opportunity to work with NCAA champions and to help lead a perennial Top-10 program. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication to excellence will immediately impact our swimming and diving program.”

Brown comes to MIT from Amherst College, where she spent the past five years as the assistant men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach. During the 2012-13 season, the Lord Jeffs’ women’s squad claimed its first-ever New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title and went on to finish in sixth place at the NCAA Division III Championships, while the men’s team came in seventh place.

While at Amherst, Brown held numerous roles on the team, such as designing workouts, dryland exercises and strength training programs, organizing the budget, mentoring the student-athletes and communicating with prospective students.

In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Brown also worked extensively with colleagues at Amherst as the Assistant to the Athletic Director, a position that she held since 2012. In that role, she organized and participated in all stages of planning and hosting of NESCAC and NCAA championship events and completed special projects for the Athletic Director.

Before arriving at Amherst, Brown attended the NCAA Women Coaches Academy and worked as an athletics advancement intern at the University of Massachusetts. She has also worked at a number of swim camps, such as the Stanford International Swim Camp, the Auburn Tiger Swim Camp and at the Northfield Swim Club.

Brown earned her Bachelor’s Degree in geology at Carleton College, where she was part of the swimming and diving team from 2004-08. She received a Master’s of Science in sports management from the University of Massachusetts and a Master’s of business administration from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts.
