Missy Franklin dropped a second from her morning swim in the women’s 100 back, clocking a 1:00.50 to win the event tonight. Coming in 2nd behind her was Tasija Karosas, who also bettered her morning time with a 1:01.11 tonight. Closing out the top 3 spots was Arizona’s Bonnie Brandon in 1:02.76. Quinn Carrozza and Regan Barneyfinished within a tenth of each other in their battle for 4th, with Carozza getting to the wall in 1:03.64 ahead of Barney (1:03.69).
The speed may be only just blossoming by Omaha — a luxury for her that she may not have to begin a real taper until after the Trials. Even without it she should have enough speed to do, oh, under a minute (of how many other female backstrokers could one EVER say that nonchalantly? Two?). You’ll see the real speed in Rio. She’ll at least challenge her ’12 London time. This is doubtless. This video shows who Missy is. She is an EXCELLENT ambassador for USA Swimming and swimming in general. You can tell how see how she doesn’t want to be rude to the interviewer – but her excitement is with the kids above her looking for an opportunity to have her sign something or just say hi. Thank God she’s part of USA Swimming.

And I agree. Her endurance is there. She swam a great double 200 free/200 back and overall the same kind of times she did 4 years ago at the same meet.
Her speed is not there yet but no doubt it will come with taper.

Missy will be fine no matter what, she will go to Rio even if she has just one individual event to swim, she’s made lifetime friends at CAL and she’s cashing in.
