Missouri State Swimming & Diving Splits with SIU; Three More Men’s Pool Records Set

The Missouri State men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams split a dual meet with Southern Illinois Saturday at Hammons Student Center Pool.

The men’s team defeated the Salukis, 148-95, and the women fell, 123.5-117.5. The win for the men improved them to 14-11 all-time against SIU while the loss for the women dropped them to 7-11 versus the Salukis.

Three pool records for the MSU men were set on Saturday. Sophomore Uvis Kalnins broke the pool mark in the 200-yard IM in 1:49.63 and junior Paul Le followed suit in the 200 backstroke in 1:45.61. Then, with the meet already decided, the 400 freestyle relay team of Le, junior Isaac McKnight, senior Vitalii Baryshok and Kalnins finished strong with the final pool record of the day in 3:02.58.

The men’s team won 10 events on the day with other victories coming from Miguel Davila in the 1,000 free (9:24.10), Le in the 50 free (20.52), Matthew Wilson in the 200 butterfly (1:50.50), Isaac Springer in the 200 breast (2:05.43) and Kalnins in the 100 free (45.76).

The 400 medley relay team of Yuri Garanito, Springer, Wilson and Baryshok claimed that event in 3:21.99.

Junior diver Garrett Nevels won the 1-meter event with 327.90 points.

The women had some strong swims despite having a difficult day overall. Senior Renata Sander won both the 200 IM (2:10.49) and 200 breast (2:21.73). Sophomore Kate Gately took the 100 free in 53.15. Sophomore Dora Kisstouched first in the 200 fly in 2:05.78 for the Bears’ only other individual event win of the day.

Gately, Janke EngelbrechtMegan Holthoff and Shannon Myer teamed to earn a victory in the 400 free relay to close the meet for the women.

Missouri State hosts Missouri Friday at 5 p.m., and the women welcome Arkansas to Hammond Student CenterSaturday at 1 p.m.
