INDIANAPOLIS, Ind – The Milwaukee women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a victory on Saturday, defeating IUPUI 155-144 inside the Jaguar Natatorium.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Nhia Caras earned a pair of individual victories for the Panthers. Caras placed first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.87 and recorded a first-place finish in the 100 free, clocking in at 52.98.
“Things went well today,” head coach Kyle Clements said. “Really happy with the performances we got out of both genders and from a lot of different classes. The women were very consistent and very deep throughout the entire meet. Not only did we get some event champions, but even in the events we lost, we were going second, third, and fourth behind it which really paid dividends in the end in what came out to be a really close meet.”
Junior Makaila Scheiblein also picked up a couple individual victories, claiming the top spot in the both the 100 breaststroke (1:08.24) and 200 breaststroke (2:25.79).
Two more Panthers earned individual victories, with junior Bella Passmani winning the 200 butterfly (2:10.39) and sophomore Molly Meland taking home top honors in the 100 fly (58.80).
The 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Kelen McDaniels, junior Cassandra Hutchins, Passamani and Caras finished first with a time of 3:32.74.
Several Milwaukee swimmers finished runner-up throughout the meet, showcasing the depth of the team. Antoni Haupt placed second in both the 1000 free and 500 free, while freshman Jenna Fistler finished runner-up in the 200 free. Sophomores Angela Kordik and Brianna Homontowski were runner-ups in the 100 breaststroke and 200 fly, respectively.
The diving efforts for the Panthers featured a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1-meter by freshman Julie Rebek and the 3-meter by McKenzie Sanchez.
“Great to see it coming from lots of different people and lots of different events in this one,” Clements said. “It was fun to get out on the road with the group and it feels like a normal season. We were very happy with the results today and we’re looking forward to next week.”
The team will compete against UIC next Saturday in the Panthers home opener. The dual will start at 12 p.m. inside the Klotsche Natatorium. Milwaukee leads the all-time series 25-7 over the Flames.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Milwaukee men’s swimming & diving team opened its season with a meet at Jaguars Natatorium Saturday afternoon, falling to IUPUI by a final score of 213-87.
The Panthers picked up two individual victories as Jay Jensen placed first in the 1000 freestyle and Jonathan Kollen claimed top honors in the 200 free. Jensen nearly earned his second win of the afternoon in the 500 free but finished runner-up by less than two-tenths of a second.
Sophomore Jared Kleczka collected a victory on the 1-meter board (295.65) to pace the diving efforts for Milwaukee.
“Things went well today,” head coach Kyle Clements said. “Really happy with the performances we got out of both genders and from a lot of different classes. Some great swims on the men’s side. Jensen had a great day, winning the 1000 free and finishing second in the 500 free while also being the fastest swimmer in our last relay.”
Freshman Vince Chiappetta made a good impression in his collegiate debut, finishing runner-up to Jensen in the 1000 free with a time of 9:48.27. Chiappetta also tallied a third-place finish in the 500 free, clocking in at 4:46.98.
Junior Mason Schoof finished second in the 200 free behind Kollen and placed third in the 200 backstroke. Freshman Zach McClellan also scored in a pair of events, tallying a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly and a third-place mark in the 200 fly.
The Panther 400 freestyle relay team of Schoof, Jensen, freshman Jackson Ahrens, and Kollen posted a time of 3:09.32 to finish runner-up in the event.

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team coasted past Horizon League foe Milwaukee in a dual inside the Natatorium on Saturday (Oct. 23), breezing to a 213-87 margin. On the women’s side, the Jaguars dropped a 155-144 decision to the Panthers in a dual that came down to the final events of the meet.
“For us, it was their first meet, so we knew they were going to come in high energy and ready to go, and it was a good challenge for us,” head coach Damion Dennis said. “I wanted to see how we’d step up in competition against a tough team – where they’d kind of stack against us and where we kind of are in our training and how we’re adapting to (training).
“I think the barometer is – we killed it, we did a good job. I think we did exceptional across the board.”
The men used their superior depth to outgun Milwaukee as the Jaguars won both the 400 medley relay to open the meet and 400 free relay to close. In between, Jaguars captured 11 event wins with Logan Kelly (100 breast and 200 breast), Nick Dibley (200 fly and 500 free) and Spencer Jyawook (50 free and 100 fly) winning two events apiece. Jyawook also competed on both relay wins, as did Kevin Burke.
Riley Lohse won the 100 backstroke in a time of 51.81, just ahead of teammate Ben Kimmel’s time of 52.43. Kelly followed with a win the 100 breaststroke for the first of his two victories, touching in a time of 56.48. Dibley earned his first of two wins in the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.22 while Dillon Stangeland collected second-place at 1:56.43. The Jags dominated the 50 free as Jyawook (20.54), Burke (20.60) and Wes Wickens (21.40) earned the top three spots. Wickens then followed with a win in the 100 free at 46.33, just ahead of Burke (47.25) and Kaden Parker (47.83).
Kimmel won the 200 backstroke at 1:51.76 ahead of Jason Harary’s time of 1:53.25 before Kelly cruised to a five-second win in the 200 breaststroke at 2:03.95. Dibley turned in a tight win in the 500 free at 4:43.03, edging Milwaukee’s Jay Jensen by less than two-tenths of a second. Jyawook won the 100 fly at 49.14 and IUPUI took the top four spots in the 200 IM, keyed by Harary (1:53.31) and Kelly (1:56.40).
IUPUI’s 400 free relay team of Jyawook, Burke, Wickens and Dibley cruised to a win in a time of 3:05.77.
On the boards, reigning Horizon League Men’s Diver of the Week Alex Scott won the 3-meter event with a score of 297.83 and Kyle Huehn was second at 286.35. Scott placed second in the 1-meter at 293.63 and Adam Schmehl was third at 263.25.
On the women’s side, Emma Theobald won all three of her individual events while Emmaleigh Zietlow won a pair of races and Sadie Smith swept the diving events.
The Jaguars 400 medley relay group of Theobald, Avery Brooks, Lillian Brandt and Caylee Hamilton won by more than seven seconds, touching in a time of 3:55.73. Then Zietlow, the reigning Horizon League Women’s Swimmer of the Week, won the 1,000 free in a time of 10:29.09 for an easy victory. Brandt won the 200 free at 1:56.45 before Theobald (57.34) and Lauren Thompson (58.08) went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke. The duo later went 1-2 in the 200 back as well as Theobald touched at 2:02.61 and Thompson closed at 2:06.42.
Zietlow capped a distance double with a win in the 500 in a time of 5:06.62. She also swam the 200 IM, finishing second in a time of 2:09.93 while Theobald earned her third win at 2:08.17.
Smith, who was named Horizon League Women’s Diver of the Week, won the 1-meter with a score of 280.13 and the 3-meter at 295.20. Isabella Smith was third on the 1-meter at 251.40 and fourth on the 3-meter at 221.40.
The meet closed with Milwaukee edging IUPUI’s 400 free relay group of Hamilton, Brandt, Avery Brooks and Thompson as the quartet swam a time of 3:34.39.
The women’s team will compete next weekend in a dual against Rutgers at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 30) while the men won’t compete again until IUPUI hosts the House of Champions Invitational, beginning on Nov. 18 inside the Natatorium.
