Michigan Wolverines Win Over Notre Dame and Northwestern

The University of Notre Dame, the University of Michigan, and Northwestern University met this afternoon at Donald B. Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a double-dual style swim meet. Two of the Midwestern universities (Notre Dame and Northwestern) saw their first action of the new year, while the Michigan women are coming off the Orange Bowl Classic earlier this week in Key Largo, Florida. The University of Michigan won the men’s and women’s meets across the board, collecting impressive victories to set the standards for the rest of the 2014-2015 season.

200 Medley Relay
The Michigan women started off the meet with a close win in the 200 medley relay over the Irish. Michigans’ A relay of Ali Deloof, Emily Kopas, Zoe Mattingly, and Maddy Frost touched the wall in 1:42.22 before Notre Dame’s A finished in 1:43.03. Northwestern’s A relay came in third, just .01 seconds behind Notre Dame (1:43.04). The Michigan men’s team delivered an impressive 1-2-3 punch of the A, B, and C relays in the men’s event. The A relay of Aaron Whitaker, Bruno Ortiz, Jeremy Raisky, and Paul Powers touched in 1:27.57, followed by the B in 1:29.32 and the C in 1:29.80. Northwestern’s A relay claimed fourth in the event.

1650 Freestyle
In the women’s 1650, Michigan once again was victorious, this time claiming the top two spots. Hannah Moore won the event in 16:27.79 ahead of teammate Jessica Wolf in 16:31. Northwestern achieved their first team win of the evening in the men’s 1650. Jordan Wilimovsky touched first in 15:06.53, followed by Michigan’s Anders Nielson in 15:09.64.

200 Freestyle
Gillian Ryan of Michigan was the only woman to swim under the 1:50 mark in the women’s 200 free, touching in a 1:49.83 to win the event. Northwestern’s Annika Winsnes took second in 1:50.33. In the men’s event, Michigan claimed the top two spots. Dylan Bosch won in 1:37.10 just ahead of Justin Glanda in 1:37.30.

100 Backstroke
Clara Smiddy of Michigan won the women’s 200 backstroke in 54.71 and was followed by Notre Dame’s Cat Galletti (55.36) and her Wolverine teammate Zoe Mattingly (55.46). Aaron Whitaker took first in the men’s event in 48.38. Northwestern’s Mark Ferguson (49.67) and Notre Dame’s Bogac Ayhan (49.91) were second and third, respectively.

100 Breaststroke
Emma Reaney picked up the first Notre Dame win of the evening in the women’s 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:01.57 was the fastest of the event by almost two seconds. Emily Kopas of Michigan was second in 1:03.31, followed by Northwestern’s Julianne Kurke (1:04.64). Bruno Ortiz notched a win in the men’s event, finishing in 55.63, before Northwestern’s Uula Auren touched in 55.95. Cameron Miller of Notre Dame finished third in 56.17.

200 Butterfly
Northwestern’s Ellen Stello posted a win in the women’s 200 butterfly in 2:00.82, adding some points for the Wildcats. Bridget Casey of Notre Dame was second in 2:01.39, followed by Northwestern’s Aja Malone in 2:03.99. In the men’s event, Bryan Hughes of Michigan won in 1:50.12. Evan White, also of Michigan, was second in 1:50.37, followed by Notre Dame’s Kevin Bradley in 1:52.53.

50 Freestyle
Ali Deloof of Michigan won the women’s event in an impressive 22.90, the only swim in the event that broke the 23-second barrier. Mary Warren of Northwestern touched the wall in second (23.20) before Maddy Frost of Michigan finished in 23.63. In the men’s event, Michigan packed a 1-2 punch as Paul Powers (20.07) and Vinny Tafuto (20.43) touched ahead of the third place finisher, Almog Olshtein of Northwestern (20.68).

100 Freestyle
Ali Deloof followed up her 50 freestyle win with the top finish in the 100 freestyle, posting a 50.33. Northwestern’s Annika Winsnes was not far behind, touching the wall in 50.54. In the men’s event, Bruno Ortiz claimed another win for Michigan in 44.85, the only 100 freestyle time of the evening under 45 seconds. Almog Olshtein came in second in 45.65, followed by his teammate Andrew Jovanovic in 46.00.

200 Backstroke
Lacey Locke gave Northwestern another leg up in the 200 backstroke, winning the women’s event in the only sub-2 minute time (1:59.54). Michigan’s Hannah Moore was second in 2:00.33, two seconds ahead of Claudia Lau, also of Michigan. Tristan Sanders of Michigan posted an impressive winning time in the men’s event. He finished in 1:46.93, over two and a half seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Alex Snarski of Northwestern was second in 1:49.46.

200 Breaststroke
Notre Dame claimed three of the top four spots in the women’s 200 breaststroke, giving the team the points they desperately needed. Emma Reaney took first in 2:13.48, finishing first ahead of Michigan’s Emily Kopas. Sherri McIntee and Danielle Margheret, both of the Irish, took third (2:18.59) and fourth (2:19.03). In the men’s event, Richard Funk swam to a win in 1:59.04, the only time under the 2-minute mark. Notre Dame’s Zach Stephens took second in 2:02.02.

500 Freestyle
Gillian Ryan of Michigan won the women’s 500 in 4:52.14, followed by her teammate, Claudia Goswell, in 4:56.11. Lauren Abruzzo of Northwestern claimed the third spot (4:56.12). Michigan claimed the top spot in the men’s 500 freestyle as well. Justin Glanda won in a time of 4:28.65, closely followed by Northwestern’s Jordan Wilimovsky in 4:28.74.

100 Butterfly
Notre Dame picked up another event win in the women’s 100 butterfly. Cat Galletti raced to the wall in 55.32, finishing ahead of Aja Malone of Northwestern (55.80) and Zoe Mattingly of Michigan (55.89). In the men’s event, Vinny Tafuto of Michigan won in 48.68, followed by three Northwestern swimmers: Mark Ferguson (49.55), Andrew Jovanovic (49.66), and Grant Halsall (50.40).

200 IM
Notre Dame’s Emma Reaney collected her third individual event win in the women’s 200 IM. She touched in 2:01.76 ahead of Michigan’s Clara Smiddy (2:02.02) and Northwestern’s Ellen Stello (2:03.90). In the men’s event, Michigan’s Will Raynor raced to the wall in 1:50.89, followed by Notre Dame’s Zach Stephens (1:52.90) and Tommy Anderson (1:54.08).

400 Freestyle Relay
In the women’s 400 freestyle relay event, Michigan and Northwestern went head to head to claim the top four spots. Michigan’s A relay of Ali Deloof, Gabby Deloof, Zoe Mattingly, and Gillian Ryan were victorious in 3:25.21, closely followed by Northwestern’s B relay in 3:25.99. Northwestern’s A relay was third, and Michigan’s B relay claimed fourth. In the men’s event, Michigan’s A relay of Tristan Sanders, Bruno Ortiz, Jack Mangan, and Justin Glanda took first in 2:59.50, followed by Northwestern’s A in 3:01.93. Notre Dame’s A and B relays took third and fourth, respectively.
