St. Louis, Mo., July 12, 2016 – Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s swimming and diving head coach Brad Shively announced the hiring of Megan Sheets as assistant coach for both teams.
Sheets replaces Nicole Kaupp, who was named the head swimming and diving coach at Luther College in March.
Sheets arrives on the Danforth Campus after spending the past four seasons at NCAA Division II Limestone College. She served as assistant men’s and women’s coach from 2012-15, and most recently was interim head coach for the 2015-16 season.
“It is an honor to be a part of Washington University, and to work with Coach Shively and these national caliber student-athletes. I look forward to helping continue the successes both in and out of the pool,” said Sheets. “This is a strong, growing team and the opportunities offered at WashU allow each to reach his or her maximum potential. Coach Shively has done an amazing job with this team and I couldn’t be happier with the chance to be a part of it.”
Sheets was responsible for all aspects of the program while serving as interim coach, including recruiting, budget management and travel arrangements. She guided Limestone to seven new school records and had four men qualify for the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships.
During her tenure as assistant coach, Limestone achieved 28 new school records and had 50 All-American performances. In 2015, Sheets helped coach the women’s team to a 18th place finish, its highest in school history. The team also received 2015 CSCAA Scholar All-America honors.
“We are thrilled to add Megan Sheets to our coaching staff. Megan has terrific coaching experience working with successful coach Greg Doyle and serving as an interim head coach last season,” Shively. “Megan is precisely what we were looking for when we initiated the search process. She brings passion and energy to the program and she also brings different training philosophies and new training perspectives to our team. We believe that Megan’s leadership, character, communication skills and exceptional background in student-athlete development makes her an ideal fit for WashU Swimming & Diving.”
She spent one year as a master’s swim coach at Wilson Family YMCA Aquatics in Augusta, Ga., and also spent three summers as summer league swim coach (two years) and assistant manager (one year) at St. Albans Country Club in St. Louis.
Sheets swam for three years at NCAA Division I Gardner-Webb University, swimming the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and 100- and 200-yard backstroke for the Bulldogs. As a senior in 2010, she finished in the top 16 in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke.
While at Gardner-Webb, she qualified for the Dean’s List all three years and was a significant reason for that program posting the top grade point average of any NCAA Division I women’s swim team in the country.
Sheets received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Gardner-Webb in 2010.
She starts at WashU on August 1.
