Mauro Castillo Breaks 2 Mexican Records at Tijuana Arena Grand Prix

Texas A&M breaststroke star Mauro Castillo took home a pair of wins at the Arena Grand Prix in Tijuana, and broke a pair of Mexican National Records. Castillo won the 100 breast with a 1:00.89, shaving .10 seconds off the previous Mexican Record of 1:00.99, which was held by Miguel de Lara. Then in the 200 breast, Castillo won again, posting a 2:12.13 to break the previous record of 2:12.25, which was also held by Miguel de Lara. This meet was a qualifier for the Central American and Caribbean Games, which will be held in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Lili Ibanez won 3 events and broke her own Mexican Record in the 100 free. Ibanez, 27, took the 100 free with a 55.49, shaving exactly .01 seconds off the previous record of 55.50, which was set by Ibanez in 2016. She also won the 50 fly with a 27.68, where she tied with Miriam Guevara, 17, but was off her personal best of 26.97, which is also the Mexican Record. She then won the 50 free with a 25.81, which was also off her own personal best and national record of 25.23.

Melissa Rodriguez won a trio of events and broke her own Mexican Record in the 50 breast. Rodriguez took the 50 breast with a 32.05, shaving .03 seconds off her own record of 32.08.She then took the 100 breast with a 1:09.28, narrowly missing her best time of 1:09.16, which is also the national record. Similarly, she took the 200 breast in 2:28.14, which is just off the Mexican Record of 2:27.77, set by Esther Gonzalez.

Jorge Iga won 4 events and broke the Mexican Record in the 50 fly. In the 50 fly, Iga posted a 24.08, taking .18 seconds off his previous best, 24.26, which was also the previous record. He also won the 50, 100, and 200 free. In the 50 free, Iga posted a 22.90, marking himself as the only swimmer in the field to break 23 seconds. In the 100 free, his first event of the meet, Iga won with a 49.95, and went 49.89 in prelims, and was the only swimmer to break 50 seconds. He also won the 200 free with a 1:49.99.
