University of Texas diving coach Matt Scoggin has been named head coach of USA Diving’s team for the upcoming FINA Diving World Cup, to be held July 15-20 in Shanghai. Held every other year, the FINA Diving World Cup is the top international meet of the 2014 season.
Two of the 12 athletes on the World Cup team are coached by Scoggin, with Murphy Bromberg (Bexley, Ohio/Austin, Texas) set to compete in women’s individual 10-meter and Maren Taylor (Arlington, Va./Austin, Texas) in women’s individual 3-meter.
Bromberg and Taylor won their respective events at the 2013 USA Diving Winter National Championships in December to earn their spots on the World Cup team. Both divers also represented the United States at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, with Scoggin serving as USA assistant coach at that competition. Taylor finished 11th in the individual 3-meter event in Barcelona in her international debut, while Bromberg placed seventh in the synchronized 10-meter contest.
Last month, Taylor won a pair of medals in FINA Grand Prix competitions, winning bronze in synchronized 3-meter at the Canada Cup and bronze in individual 3-meter at the Puerto Rico Grand Prix.
Scoggin also served as head coach of the U.S. team at the 2011 Pan American Games.
