Matt Grevers gets his WC Trials Cut in the 100 Fly (Video)

June 15th, 2013 News

Matt Grevers has been talking all season about wanting to add the 50 fly to his schedule at World Championship Trials but he almost forgot that in order to do that he needed to qualify for the 100 fly. He had no problem doing so on Saturday morning at the Phoenix Summer Invite where he ripped a 52.69. Special thanks to long time Phoenix Swim Club coach Takahisa Ide for the video!

Well World Trials is less than a week and half away and he looked like he was struggling that last 10 meters. When hes fully tapered it should be quite interesting to see what he goes.

I thought the USA will have individual 50 strokes in the trials for the first time?

So, as long as as Grevers wins (or finish second) in FINA A in the 50 fly, he is qualified to swim the event in Barcelona, regardless of how he swims in 100 fly or other races?

I think only the winners of the 50s of stroke are guaranteed a spot, but yes that is true. In fact, I think Grevers had said that he would only swim 100 of back and free at trials, and then all three of the 50s, so this might have just been to qualify him for the 50 fly. That said, he may want to go for the 100 as well after this swim.

Actually that’s exactly what the article said, I should have read first. But yeah, the 100 fly swim has no bearing on 50 qualification.

Quite a few 52 mids from the Americans this season. It will be interesting to see what these guys will put up at World Champ Trials. Perhaps a sub 51 performance?

Impressive time from Greevers.. he will try to go for 3 races? Relay free Individual Fly and Back?

Sub-51 would be good to see.. no one since Phelps did it.. and Crocker PB still stands as textile..

50.4 by Crocker. That’s a very tough one. I doubt anyone can come close to that in the WORLD other than maybe Chad Le Clos.

I hope he can go around 48.4 on 100 free to be very usefull for the 400 free relay ( prelims or maybe final ) . Tough tasks for him but he has the talent . We will see in 2 weeks how it unfolds .

If he really is not expecting his best time at back this year.. I don´t think he might go faster on other strokes,.,. unless he is dropping some back training for free/fly double..

I don’t see Matt Grevers in the relay final but, we never know, if he swims it in Barcelona, the 50 fly could affect his 4X100 free. The 50 fly semi-finals are just before the 4X100 free relay final on day 1. Same problem with Florent Manaudou for France.

Bobo probably same problem for Cielo too…

Very impressive especially given that it looked like he tied up considerably in the last 5 meters. I’m interested to hear what his split was??
