BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University director of athletics David Hicks announced the hire of Matt Brinton as the next head coach of men’s and women’s swimming programs.

“Matt’s passion for building a championship program was apparent from my first conversation with him,” Hicks said. “He brings a student-athlete focused approached to training that is an excellent fit for King and our swim program.”

Brinton joins the Tornado staff following a stint at Emory & Henry College. He joined the Emory & Henry staff last year, serving as the recruiting coordinator. Along with that, he led the distance training group and advised all the Wasps workouts. Brinton also designed and implemented dry land and injury prevention programs for the Wasps.

“I am honored to join the King University athletic staff and to have the opportunity to lead the Tornado swim team,” Brinton said. “This team is already prepared for high achievement and I am confident that we will continue to build upon previous years of success, while continuing the program’s history of commitment and sportsmanship. I am excited to guide such a great group of motivated student-athletes to excellence in the pool, in the classroom, and beyond.”

Prior to his time at Emory & Henry, Brinton served as the lead coach for the 12-14 and 15-18 age groups for the Eagle Swim Team for nearly three years. While there he managed a staff of eight coaches and 125 athletes. He developed and implemented training plans and group structures.

Brinton graduated from Towson University in 2017 with degrees in sociology, anthropology, and criminal justice. He still owns top 10 times in school history in the 50 yard freestyle as well as the 100 and 200 yard backstroke. He also owns the freshman record in the 100 yard backstroke.
