Following up a gold medal performance last night in the 100 breaststroke, Germany’s Marco Koch won his second gold medal of the competition in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a Championship Record time of 2:01.21. That swim took out the previous record of 2:01.35 set by Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta back at the 2012 Championships in Istanbul. Gyurta also won the event in 2014, where Koch finished 2nd.
Gyurta held the world record for nearly seven years up until about three weeks ago when Koch broke it at the World Cup stop in Berlin in a time of 2:00.44. Koch was also the gold medalist at the 2015 LC World Championships in Kazan, where he upset Gyurta who had won the three previous titles.
Koch led throughout the race, extending his lead over the final 100m to win by 1.50 seconds. Silver went to Great Britain’s Andrew Willis in 2:02.71, and bronze to Russia’s Mikhail Dorinov in 2:03.09. Americans Nic Fink (2:03.79) and Josh Prenot (2:03.96) finished 4th and 5th respectively.
Koch has now finished both of his individual events here in Windsor with two gold medals. He’ll likely return later in the week on Germany’s medley relays.
