After day 1 of the Magnus Cup Invite at Cleveland State, the Cleveland State men lead the team race. Duquesne leads on the women’s side. Full results can be found here.
Cleveland State:
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed day one of the CSU Magnus Cup on Friday night with the men in first place out of six teams and the women in fifth place out of ten.
The teams completed the women’s 1M dive, men’s 3M dive, 200 Free Relay, 50 Breast, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free and 400 Medley Relay on Friday.
For the men, it was a record-breaking day. Philipp Sikatzki broke the CSU record in the 200 IM with a 1:48.74 time, only to then have that same record broken in the finals by teammate Tommi Wolst (1:48.53). Sikatzki also broke the Busbey Natatorium Pool record in the 100 Back, leading off the 400 Medley relay with a split of 47.44.
Sikatzki, Wolst, Szymon Golczyk and Robert Tolson also broke the Cleveland State record as a team in the 400 Medley relay, swimming a 3:12.82. The CSU “B” relay team of John LaValle, Jared Stergar, Mauricio Gonzalez and Phillip Brittain finished right behind the “A” team, swimming a 3:25.41.
Sikatzki, Tolson, Adam Ingledew and Declan McLaughlin finished first in the 200 Free relay with a time of 1:21.75.
Individually, Brittain finished second in the 50 Breast (25.48) while Patrick Tippen was not far behind in fourth (26.58). In the 500 Free, Patrick Walsh(4:38.07) and Mac Lewis (4:41.02) finished fourth and fifth respectively while Wolst’s school record placed him first in the 200 IM with Gage Allemansecond (1:52.01). Sikatzki (20.24), McLaughlin (20.92) and Ingledew (20.92) all had top-five finishes in the 50 Free.
Danny Roberts placed first in the 3M diving with a score of 284.90.
The women also had several notable performances on Friday.
Tobie Zeller (30.73 – 50 Breast) and Anna Evans (24.13 – 50 Free) both had top-ten swim finishes while Tori Taffner (227.65) and Sammie Sposet (220.10) both finished ninth and tenth respectively in the 1M diving.
The women’s 400 Medley relay team (Oltman, Zeller, McNamara, Evans – 3:53.57) and 200 Free relay team (Vandewerker, Evans, Bennett, McNamara – 1:36.40) both finished seventh.
The Cup will continue tomorrow (Nov. 21) with 9:00 a.m. prelims, 1:00 p.m. diving finals (women’s 3M, men’s 1M) and 5:00 p.m. finals for the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 800 Free.
Akron:
CLEVELAND, Ohio – After the first day of the Magnus Cup Invitational at Cleveland State, the Akron swimming and diving team recorded four first-place finishes and find themselves in second place with 470 points on Friday, Nov. 20.
Duquense (509.5), Akron (470), and Xavier (320) are the top three teams out of 10 schools after day one of the invitational.
The Zips diving trio of senior Alice Hottensmith (Brunswick, Ohio), junior Rachel Aepelbacher (Novi, Mich.), and junior Paige Kelkenberg (Lockport, N.Y.) swept the one-meter diving competition. Hottensmith recorded a score of 288.25 for first place, Apelbacher was awarded a 264.75 by the judges for second and Kelkenberg tallied a 260.90 for third place.
Akron began the Magnus Cup touching first place in the 200 free relay. The team of freshmen Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio), Sophomore Susan Franz(Canton, Ohio), senior Hannah Raspopovich (Crown Point, Ind.) and freshen Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) swam the relay in the third fastest time in program history (1:32.05). The squad’s time also ranks as the 12th fastest time in the NCAA this year.
The Zips swept the top three times in the 50 breaststroke in the second event. Raspopovich placed first at an impressive 28.92, freshmen Madison Myers(Akron, Ohio) finished one second later at 29.28 and sophomore Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain.) rounded out the three fastest times at 29.60.
Engel and Raspopovich continued their strong performances with second and third place finishes in the 50 freestyle event. Engel had a second place finish with a 23.26, which is the third-fastest time in program history and Raspopovich was close .08 seconds behind touching in at 23.34.
To close out day one of the invitational, Akron’s junior Laura Savariau (Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud, France), Raspopovich, Fazekas, and senior Ashley Niznik(McDonald, Pa.) tallied the Zips final first place finish in the 400 medley relay. The squad swam the relay in a blazing time of 3:44.68 finding themselves with the fourth-fastest time in the program and the 15th fastest in the NCAA in 2015.
Akron swimming and diving competes in day two of the Magnus Cup Invitational tomorrow, Nov. 21, with prelims starting at 9 a.m. and the finals set for 5 p.m. at Cleveland State’s Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
Duquesne:
uquesne’s swimming team finished day one of three at the top of the standings at the Magnus Cup Invitational at Cleveland State. The Dukes tallied 509.5 points in the 10-team field, nearly 40 points ahead of second place Akron.
The Dukes opened the evening with a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.02. Sophomore Lexi Santer followed that with a second place showing in the 500 free in 4:57.44.
The 200 IM followed with Duquesne placing 2-3-4, with freshman Abigail Stauffer in second in 2:02.85, sophomore Kayla Owens in third in 2:02.95 and Santer in fourth in 2:04.12.
Senior Samantha Ray touched the pads first in the 50 free with a time of 23.12 and was followed by sophomore Gabrielle Sibilia in fourth in 23.45.
The evening ended with the DU 400 medley relay teams capturing second in 3:46.73 and fourth in 3:50.88.
The Red and Blue return to action Saturday with prelims at 9:00 am and finals at 5:00 pm.
Saginaw Valley State:
UNIVERSITY CENTER – The SVSU swimming & diving team traveled to Ohio to compete in the three day Cleveland State Invitational. The women’s team finished in seventh place with 86 points, and the men finished fourth with 249. Both teams broke several program records.
The men’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Peter Lin, Michael Spears, Grayson Arnold and Shaun Yap took seventh place, recording a time of 1:25.89, a new program record.
Shaun Yap finshed first in the 50 yard breastroke for the Cardinals with a time of 25.00. Tyler Miller followed in ninth place, recording a time of 27.10.Lydia Mattar placed fifth in the finals of the same race for the women, posting a time of 29.74.
Peter Lin took another first place win for the men and made a new program record in the 500 yard freestyle, coming in at 4:33.68. Amanda Thielen also posted a new program record in the 500 yard freestyle, landing at tenth place with a final time of 5:08.27. She recorded the record for the SVSU women in the prelims, with a time of 5:06.00.
Yap took ninth place in the 50 yard freestyle and made a new SVSU record with a time of 21.47 in the finals.
Peter Lin, Shaun Yap, Dalton Pokley, and Tanner Peltier finished fourth in the men’s 400 yard medley relay, posting a time of 3:26.18.
Maxwell Buxton earned second place for men’s diving, scoring 246.10 in the finals. Teammate Aaron Fuchs took seventh with a final of 146.10.
Wilhelmina Francisco and Kathleen Murphy finished fourteenth and fifteenth in women’s diving, respectively, posting scores of 215.90 and 192.15. Erica Wysocki took seventeenth at 186.00.
Xavier:
CLEVELAND – After the first of three days of competition, Xavier swimming collected a number of new personal records, and two new school records. The Xavier women stand in third place and the men stand in second with two days of competition remaining.
The Musketeer women started the meet by setting a new school record in the 200 free relay, with Paxtyn Drew, Ashley Whiteley, Caroline Gaertner and Claire Brolsma finishing in a time of 1:33.78 to take fourth place.
In the 500 free, Katie Kerr set a new school record time of 4:56.20 during preliminary heats, only to top her time in the finals, taking first place with a Xavier best time of 4:55.17.Mackenna Rife took fourth with a time of 4:59.49, and Jenna Wilkes finished sixth with the ninth best time in XU history, 5:04.09. Freshman Maggie Kauffeld also entered the Xavier records with her preliminary time, setting the 13th fastest time in school history with a time of 5:06.86.
In the 200 IM, Becca Titterton entered the Xavier top-20 times at 14 with a 2:10.51 finish.
In the 50 free Brolsma took sixth with a time of 23.73, improving her third-fastest time in Xavier records.
Four other Musketeers entered or improved their Xavier-best times: Gaertner (23.94 – fifth), Drew (24.04 –sixth), Laura Dicus (24.23 – T-11th) and Whiteley (24.32 – 15th).
The women closed the event by setting the fourth fastest time in school history in the 400 medley relay, with Gaertner, Dresner, Whiteley and Drew finishing in 3:50.28.
Xavier collected 320 points on the women’s side, trailing only Duquesne (509.5) and Akron (470) out of the 10 teams competing.
The Xavier men began the day by placing second and fourth in the 200 free relay, with the Xavier ‘A’ team of Rodrigo Suriano, Bobby Snader, Enrique Hernandez and Tony Millersetting the fourth fastest time in school history by touching the wall in 1:22.10.
Xavier also took two of the top five spots in the 50 breast, with Michael Pettinichi touching the wall in 26.18 to take third and Snader taking fifth with a time of 26.66.
In the 500 free, the reigning BIG EAST champion Nick Foster led the Musketeers in, taking third with a time of 4:37.37.
The Xavier men collected another top-three finish in the 200 IM, with Chase Baldwintaking third with a time of 1:53.76, the 11th fastest time in school history. Erik Biernatfollowed him in with a time of 1:54.18 to take fourth.
In the 50 free Suriano took second place and moved up to fourth all-time in XU records with a time of 20.55. Miller set the sixth fastest time in school history in the prelims (20.87) before finishing fifth in the championship heat with a time of 21.03. Hernandez entered the school records for the event with a time of 21.22, 15th fastest in XU history. Knox Hittentered the Xavier records at 19th with a time of 21.31 in the prelims.
The Xavier men closed the event with Nathan Runyon, Pettinichi, Biernat and Suriano setting a time of 3:25.81 in the 400 medley to take third place.
The Musketeers collected 506 points, standing behind only host CSU’s point-total of 612.5.
Events resume tomorrow, with prelims starting at 9:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 5:00 p.m.
