  • Austin, Texas

  • Meet Mobile: “2025 Four Corners Speedo Sectionals –  Austin”

Virginia commit Madi Mintenko was just off her lifetime best in the 100 free posting a 47.74 to win the event in Austin on night 1. Mintenko has a best time of a 47.47 that she swam in December at Winter Juniors.

Her time tonight would have finaled at NCAAs last week as it took a 47.88 to earn a second swim. With the graduation of Alex Walsh and Gretchen Walsh, Virginia will be in search of new relay swimmers for the 400 free relay next year and Mintenko has the potential to fill in a role.

Indiana commit and 16 year old Paige Downey swam to a lifetime best in the 200 fly. Downey earned the win in a 1:57.56, ahead of her old lifetime best of a 1:58.90 that she swam earlier this month. Primarily a distance freestyler, Downey has shown her versatility off and made huge strides in the event this year. Coming into the season, her lifetime best was a 2:04.56 from February 2023.

Roni Black posted a lifetime best 2:10.55 en route to a win in the 200 breaststroke. The San Diego State commit previously had a lifetime best of a 2:10.83 from December at Winter Juniors. She has now dropped over three seconds this season as her best time entering the season was a 2:13.58.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club won the girls 200 free relay in a 1:34.24 with the team of Baylee Sloan, Remington Willard, Sidney Stolle, and Juliette Daigneault. Willard split a 22.96 on the 2nd leg.

Highlighting the boys side of the night was the 200 butterfly as it was a tight race between Oliver Schimberg and Gherman Prudnikau. Schimberg used a strong 3rd 50 to earn the win in a 1:46.62 dropping from his lifetime best of a 1:48.69. Prudnikau dropped from his lifetime best of a 1:50.55 that he swam at Winter Juniors.

Ohio State commit Ethan Reniewicki improved upon his lifetime best in the 100 free touching in a 43.09. His previous best was a 43.27 from Winter Juniors. He has dropped over two seconds this year as he swam a 45.28 last year. His time tonight would have been 6th on OSU’s roster this season.

Dropping two seconds off his lifetime best was Caden Oprandy as he touched in a 1:58.03 to win the 200 breast. Oprandy entered the meet with a 2:00.69 from February and entered the season with a best time of a 2:01.62. The West Virginia commit would stand at #2 in the event for the team this season.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s relay of Jordan Falls, Lewis Esterly, Oprandy, and Reniewicki won the boys 200 free relay in a 1:20.41. Falls led off in a 19.88, marking his first time under 20 seconds as his lifetime best is a 20.41.

University of Virginia
4 x 100 yard freestyle relay
C. Curzan-A. Canny-M. Mintenko-A. Moesch

The proposed relay lineup has the potential to finish Top 4 next year. However, if the opportunity presents itself in the transfer market, Todd DeSorbo should definitely explore the female sprinter (50/100 yard freestyle) options especially for 4 x 50/100 yard freestyle relay.

That relay lineup could win the 4×100 free relay next year – they all have the potential to be under 47.0. Their 200 MR/FR are where they are going to struggle to be at the top again, but Claire being the top 50 backstroker and second fastest 50 freestyler will help!

As a Canadian who doesn’t really understand what Sectionals is, why are some LCM and some SCY on the same weekend?

Sectionals are the lowest level of open (age/nationally) organized meets affiliated with USA Swimming. They can serve all types of swimmers, from a quick teenager using it as a taper/focus meet to a local pro looking to get racing experience in LCM (and sometimes posting Olympic gold medal-worthy times). To my knowledge the organization at the discretion of the local meet organizers with input from the participating clubs. During the leadup to OTs, for example, it’s not uncommon to see Sectionals meets run prelims in SCY and finals in LCM to allow swimmers to hit qualifying times.
